I would suggest that for teachers coming from the UK, for most of them the academic year / contracts have .just ended at the end of July, so it has taken them a couple of weeks to get the paperwork, flights and visas organised with the relevent agencies once they finished at their previous schools. Nothing to do with special treatment just common sense.

Even the top paying jobs salaries are laughable.. International school salaries here are actually significantly better than UK state schools. Especially when, scholarships for dependents, health care, flight allowance (inc dependents) and bonuses which for some are yearly .... And add in the creative accounting by the school's accountants which reduces the tax bill and many international teachers take home £4000+ net a month. Not many UK teachers make £50000 per annum net in the state or private sector.

Do you have any idea how many Filipino/Filipina teachers there are in Thailand, especially in BKK and Chiang Mai during a normal year? There are loads of them. Many of them have probably borrowed the money for the quarantine.

Expat Brad
I smell BS. Or, are the Thai schools offering contracts and employment outside of Thailand. Only expensive private schools do this. What about the 39,000 government schools. I don't think that they are hiring in the same manner!!!
Elkski
I have met many Thai teachers and their English skills were severely lacking, even the ones with English degrees. I watch several Phillipina YouTube channels and they speak better English than almost all the thai women I have met.

Thanks A friend worked at a top notch private school in Bangkok, the filippinos taught everything and a few were paid more than many of the other teachers due to being at the school for many years. Reading the commets here people do not know a thing about what teachers can make at a private school in Thailand. My friend started at 120,000b a month this was base salary more was paid for extra work. He could make 30,000 more a month for extra classes also they were paid 40,000 a month housing allowance. phetphet
With a lot of people losing their jobs here in Thailand due to COVID. Both Thais and foreigners. I am surprised that there is such a demand for schoolteachers as surely a lot of people won't be able to afford the international school fees this coming year

I’d say they speak and teach better English than some of the so called ESL teachers in Thailand. Met a couple of teachers in Bangkok last year. They had completed their few hours of training and had jobs to go to in Udon Thani schools. One guy was from South Shields and the other Scouser. I just pity the poor kids who where unlucky enough to have them as their teachers.
GaryAdriaenssens
And the biggest victims are the students (not that most of them care...) and the foreign teachers who are here and never wanted or needed to leave but are treated as another type of virus.... If the rumours are true hundreds of teaching positions are still vacant and schools are looking but the great rulers of most of these schools create a list of about 50 requirements that even a very qualified NES teacher can't fulfill. Lord have mercy! ????
aussienam
Unless it is a lifestyle choice to go to Thailand to teach English, many foreign teachers do not get paid that well there (exceptions of course if you are working in specialist area, international school etc). The cost of flights, insurance, ASQ, visa app, etc will add up, meaning that for several months, you will be working for free, as you will be paying for the cost of getting back in.
Popular Post Elkski
The government sent out a decree recently about hiring more English teachers. The teacher salary debate always rages. What is clear is there is not a set pay scale because some farangs complain their wife or GF only makes 15,000 baht when I have seen a written salary list with thai teachers making more than 50,000 baht/mo. 200,000 is surprising to me but believable. Some people have very advanced teaching degrees and the private schools must compete. I doubt many of the people who send their children to private schools have been hit hard financially from the virus. Some of you guys talk like people are starving and dying in the streets and Thailand is about to go into ruins, but all the thai people I know are doing fine. One gal had a month off during lockdown and 1 month with reduced pay. What kind of people do some of you guys associate with?? You will probably find that the deal is: your salary is (nominally) THB 24000 a month, the school or the agency will pay for the quarantine and insurance ( a bulk deal probably negotiated), you will receive THB 1200 a month, until such time as the costs (and any "incidental expenses" of the agents and school principals) have been recouped. Some will be making a lot of money, you can be certain it won't be the Filipino teachers. In fact, I should imagine their salaries will never again approach the (not very heady) heights they achieved pre Covid.

Popular Post FlyingThai
The amount of racism and bickering in this thread is unbelievable. So you think a Filipino teacher employed at an international school doesn't make good money? Think again buddy. NoComment
I am sure any student would agree that a farang English teacher (L1 versus L2) is a far superior English teacher than a Filipino. Me thinks Rooster would agree also. However, if they have all of the correct paperwork etc I suppose a Filipino is better than nothing.

NS, possible, although I taught in Thailand ten years ago and private schools were nowhere near 120,000 baht/month (for NS). These days I have no idea about salary levels. The old standard Thai govt school salary of 30-35k seems to have remained the same, I gather.

I wouldn't want to be taught English by an Australian or Southern State American I can hardly understand. Apart from that being a NES doesn't make you a teacher. You need to have a proper command as well as knowledge of the language as well as an exceptional vocabulary. Plus ideally a teachers certification or BE. Not really what these begpacker "teachers" recruited at Khao San Road bring to the table but hey at least they have an Australian/Canadian/US passport. ????
