Digital Professionals, Looking to Stay Long-Term in Thailand?

Visa Amnesty is ending and all foreigners on short-terms visas in Thailand must make preparations to leave the country before September 26th. Unlike the two previous 30-day amnesty extensions in June and July, this extension is final and the authorities are warning short-term visa holders not to overstay their welcome in the Kingdom.

This announcement has left thousands of foreigners unsure of their next steps—with less than 2 months to figure things out.

Fortunately, if you are a digital freelancer, online business owner or location-independent worker and you wish to extend your stay in Thailand beyond the amnesty period, you can apply for Shelter’s Umbrella Partnership Program.

Under this program, you can be employed by a Thai company and receive a business visa and work permit for one year, renewable. You can even apply for the business visa in Bangkok, without leaving Thailand.

The business visa is personal, so you cannot include dependents. However, your spouse and/or children may apply for a Non-Immigrant O Visa, tied to your Non-Immigrant B Visa.

Once you hold 3 consecutive 1-year visa extensions, tied to the same work permit, you may apply for Permanent Residency. You must have a monthly income of THB 80,000, earned in Thailand (THB 30,000 if married with a Thai Spouse for 5 years) or invest a minimum of THB 3-10,000,000 in Thailand, and attend an interview where you must demonstrate knowledge of the Thai language.

How It Works

The application process takes around 3 weeks to complete, so be sure to apply before September 4th if you wish to obtain your visa before the amnesty period ends.

To be eligible, you must be able to bill a minimum of USD 2,500 per month. Shelter invoices you or your clients each month, makes tax, social security and service deductions, and then pays you the rest as a wage.

Shelter processes your tax and social security payment each month on your behalf and provides you with a Thailand Tax ID Number (TIN), covering everything needed from a legal perspective to establish tax residency in Thailand.

Shelter’s services include everything you’d normally expect of an employer: your visa application, work permit for the duration of employment, drafting of employment agreements, opening a Thai or overseas bank account, and obtaining a Thai social security card. Clients are accompanied to Immigration when necessary, such as to obtain their work permit or renew their visa, and guided through each step of the process. For 90 day check-ins, they collect clients’ passports and complete the process for them.
