The Department of Employment has created over 90,000 jobs to boost the economy in the aftermath of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Minister of Labour Suchart Chomklin said that he had ordered the department to prepare vacant positions both at home and overseas for those who are unemployed due to the Covid-19 outbreak to kick-start the economy.

“The department has prepared 91,444 vacant positions, of which 42,367 are domestic jobs mostly in the Eastern Economic Corridor [EEC] projects in Rayong, Chonburi and Chachoengsao provinces with required qualifications ranging from elementary school graduate to bachelor’s degree holder,” he said. “The rest 49,077 positions are overseas jobs in countries where the Covid-19 situation has started to improve, such as Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Israel.”

“To solve the unemployment problem, the government has also ordered related ministries to increase the hiring of both permanent and part-time staff, such as at the ministries of Higher Education, Natural Resources and Environment, and Agriculture and Cooperatives. As for the Ministry of Labour, we have set aside a budget for fiscal year 2021 to hire an additional 30,000 people,” added Suchart.

Statistics from the Department of Employment reveals that the 10 most sought after positions among domestic employers are: manufacturing labour, general labour, gemstone and ornament maker, sales representative, retail sales staff, product delivery staff, product presenter, driver, warehouse staff, and security guard.

Don't disparage jobs governments create during difficult economic times.

The US Government's Works Progress Administration (WPA) at its peak was keeping over 3 million people of all backgrounds working and earning money to feed themselves and their families.  The work they did totally changed the infrastructure of the the US, adding over a 600,000 miles of roads and streets, over 10,000 bridges, the Hover Dam, and the dams and waterworks of The Tennessee Valley Authority.

Similar schemes may be needed again if the world's economies don't recover well after COVID-19.

My mother used to say WPA stood for We Poke Along.

Let's be very clear about two things concerning "creating jobs" here -- if only to bring the DoE down from its high chair:

1 - The DoE has "created" nothing. These vacant job positions exist with or without the DoE.

2 - More than half of the "created" jobs are overseas, i.e. the DoE had even less of a role in "creating" anything. Also begs the question how workers are supposed to get to Japan, Taiwan, or Israel under the currently still prevailing, difficult circumstances. I doubt the DoE is going to sponsor expensive flight tickets for 49,077 people.

A drop in the ocean !! Real unemployed figures over the last few months would be scary and I’m wondering how a lot are surviving as the government only paid 5000bht for three months and I’m not seeing any places handing out food parcels etc anymore .
So how are they all surviving ?

Just because some countries have a declining infection rate   does not mean they are safe to travelto. Maybe the Parliment would like to take personal trips to these foreign jobsites, housing sites and transportation.  The Thailand jobs I am sure are non existent.

well, that depends where and what the jobs are. sounds like they are talking about civil service jobs, there's nothing to be gained from a bloated civil service, it will just encourage inefficiency and bureaucracy, and thailand already loves its forms and signatures and stamps required to achieve the most minimal of tasks - open a bank account and see the paperwork that is generated - in a country that see's itself advancing into the digital age!

i have worked in thai government offices and the vast majority of staff have very little to do already. they knock off at 4.30pm so from 4pm the already snails pace of work ceases, they gather their belongings, tidy their desks, play computer games and then at 4.30 on the dot there' a mass exodus... jobs for life and zero responsibility or stress.

Governments dont create jobs. They provide an environment that either encourages economic growth or does not. Job creation or loss is the result of government decisions.
