Hua Hin smiling again after the crisis: Tourism is back - 70% midweek, 90% long weekends, TAT

Hua Hin is showing early signs of recovery, post COVID lockdown, Thai news site Ejan has reported.

 

The report pointed to a marvelous present and a seemingly even better future for the resort.

 

According to Ejan - and the local TAT rep she quoted - Hua Hin is smiling again after the storm clouds broke and the sun and the blue sky shone through.

It's gone from "zero" to hero and the traders are happy to welcome everyone back.

 

The Ejan reporter said she had gone there yesterday, September 1st a normal midweek day, and it wasn't full but nearly all the shops, hotels and restaurants were fully open.

She was greeted everywhere by happy locals. 

 

She based some of this positive vibe on her chat with "Phee Gift" of the TAT who said:

 

"We're smiling again. It's a completely different picture to during the height of the pandemic. 

 

"There were no tourists at all then now we are getting back to 100%".

 

She said that on midweek days tourism had recovered to 60-70% of previous levels.

 

 

On weekends it was better,

 

"It's 90% on long weekends," Gift enthused, citing the resort's proximity to Bangkok, ease of travel from the capital and abundance of local attractions as reasons for the recovery.

 

Ejan said that there were no foreigners to swell the ranks at the moment but said that the locals were all pulling together to promote the province and could smile again.

This finally proves, conclusively, that the Thai tourism industry does not need foreigners and that, going forward, domestic tourism will be more than sufficient to generate the foreign currency reserves required for Thailand to thrive.

So forget foreign tourists then. Much too complicated and dangerous. The others like Phuket and Samui should learn from Hua Hin. Perhaps they built the wrong infrastructure. Look at Pattaya. Thais are no sex tourists. So they suffer now with all their sex business.

I passed through on a Tuesday evening, couple of weeks ago. Bar area was desolate, but more normal areas seemed not so bad.

I just got back from 4 nights break in Hua Hin on Monday. I never seen the place so deserted. Yes many restaurants and bars open but the wife and I were almost always the only customers eating and drinking. The beach was particularly deserted, the only people we seen in the sea were locals collecting shellfish.

 

There were 4 rooms occupied in our 25 room hotel. We stayed Wed Thus Fri and Sat and the weekends were no different. Saw a group of 10 same-tshirt wearing staycationers who had obviously taken advantage of the Hilton and other 5 star resorts in the government initiative.

 

The Market VIllage mall and the night market was also deathly quiet.

 

The only busy place was behind Blueport Mall where there was a festival of sorts aimed at locals. Tamarind Market was about 20% full. The Father Ted Irish bar had a (very bad) Rolling Stones Tribute Band on the Friday night, and it was packed with farang expats, but everywhere else was deserted.

 

The bar area in Soi Bintabaht was the quietest i've seen it, and there is whole row of 5 or 6 closed-down restaurants. The locals/owners we spoke to are thinking late next year for any real recovery, if they can survive till then.

 

Very sad as it is my favourite place to have a short break.

That said, going to find me a beach a little out, hopefully with some shelter, food service and some grog and just take it all in.

I have one, but the more the merrier as want to entertain the kids too, but not paying for those water works places, beach and sand castles is what is the preferred, good looking females in G-strings would be a bonna, sorry, meant to saY a bonus.

Don't forget that they have royal palaces in Hua Hin and it's close to Bangkok. So don't expect replication in other places.

the very large Baan Khun Por Food Market will be packed starting around 7pm. Live Thai band. 

cheap good food. try the BBQ ribs and mashed potatoes(opposite the stage), whole BBQ fish(at the entrances) and the little Indian food stall(in the corner next to the stage) are good. many other thai food stalls:

Bluport Mall for getting out of the heat for lunch. Swenson's Dairy Queen for kids. same Market Village. Market Village is better for kid's than Bluport.

Thank God it wasn't a dirty Egyptian or other nasty foreigner from outside ASEAN otherwise they'd have to close the town and province down.  Just relatively 'clean' local migrants.  Dodged a bullet there!  "Whew!"

Thai's don't typically lie on the beach sapping up the Sun as Westerners do in fact they avoid it.
At Midday go check the Air Conditioned shopping Malls that's where they'll be.

A friend went to Hua Hin last week and told me there were large amounts of jellyfish in the sea. I dont know if they were a dangerous variety. Just to make you aware.

yes this is a problem in Hua Hin. the jellyfish are very large, between 8 to 14 inches. you will see them everywhere dead on the sand during certain times of the year.

Okay, if the tourism have recovered 90% at weekends. Hell yeah, then it=s only to wait until the 40 million tourists are back. Then it will have recovered 350 000%.
