webfact
Govt expedites project to connect Lanta island KRABI (NNT) - The government is expediting the project to connect Lanta island, to mainland Krabi, to allow residents and visitors to travel more conveniently. Mr Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, and Mr Saksiam Chidchob, Minister of Transport, have inspected the environmental impact assessment (EIA) covering the plan to connect Koh Lanta, in Koh Klang subdistrict, Lanta Noi subdistrict and a road construction project from Sala Dan village and Sang Ka Ou village, Koh Lanta district, Krabi province, to solve the problem of local people having to contend with the long journey. The time taken for travel is a problem at present especially when attending an emergency, and travel is expensive, because outside business hours it is necessary to pay for a ferry trip. Koh Lanta is an island with potential for greater tourism development. It is already visited by a large number of tourists resulting in heavy traffic. At present, people have to travel to the island by ferry which can take 1-2 hours. To save residents and tourists’ travel time, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has launched these two projects to enhance the quality of life, promote the economy and support growth and improvement of the landscape. The construction is expected to be completed in September 2021 with a total construction budget of 450 million baht. -- © Copyright NNT 2020-09-08 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow Thaivisa on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

fasteddie
Koh Lanta's infrastructure is stretched to it's limits as it is, the last thing it needs is more traffic.

Agree. They could even have fewer tourists and make more money by charging a premium for the eco holidays. The kind of people that like that sort of stuff will pay a lot for a holiday like that...more then some package tour tourist going to see nicknak shops and ride an elephant.

I am afraid the elephant riding tourists amount greatly exceeds those few eco-tourists willing to pay extra. Increase the road and thousands more will try to flock to it, thus the sustainability and beauty will be lost. But hey, when did Thailand ever worry about that.
