Sale of alcoholic beverages to be banned via electronic channels

Alcohol sales via electronic channels will be prohibited, the Royal Gazette announced on its website yesterday (September 8 ).

 

The announcement, signed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, stated that due to the popularity of e-commerce, some entrepreneurs opted to sell alcoholic beverages via electronic channels, making it difficult to control the date, time, venue and target groups buying alcohol to be in compliance with the legal limit as stated in the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act BE 2551.

 

Therefore, the prime minister, after getting advice from the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee, announced that sales or “other actions” related to the selling of alcoholic beverages via electronic channels will be prohibited.

 

This includes direct selling, persuading, introducing the product or related services via electronic channels that enable sellers and consumers to complete a sale without physically meeting.

 

This prohibition does not include the selling and paying for alcoholic beverages via electronic methods at stores, restaurants or establishments that serve alcohol.

 

The ban will take effect within 90 days of being announced in the Royal Gazette.

Couldn't these 'problems' be overcome by requiring e.g. a traceable ID number and registered delivery address of some sort for all online purchases?

 

Do the likes of Tesco, Makro, TOPS etc. have a physical meeting with their alcohol suppliers every time they make a purchase? Surely not, it's probably all done by phone or electronically! How about booze importers?

 

Come to that, instead of the archaic alcohol sales rules in shops, to prevent (apparently, among other reasons) sales to school-age kids, wouldn't it be sensible (and therefore not likely in Thailand) to require age ID for every shop sale - after all, Thais have ID cards showing dob/age from (I think) the age of 7, foreigners have other forms of ID.

 

Hmmmm, on second thoughts, maybe not; using the example of 'foreigners can't pay bills at Tesco because no Thai ID', perhaps that'd mean those foreigners who buy booze would be prevented from doing so - grounds for a riot!!!!

I have lost count the number of times i've wandered into a 7/11 or a BigC store to buy alcohol at 2.05 PM. Gets me every time. As well as covid-free destination maybe the next target is alcohol free. That would work right?

Once Boon Rawd and the other big guys figure out how to sell online, it will be OK.  It just takes a thick contribution to help see the light and stamp out these little guys trying to make a baht or two by selling drinkable beer online.

In itself, this change is minor. But it is just another example of how this Junta is sucking the joy and freedom of choice out of Thailand. Stomping on the little guys and handing it over to the big guys. No wonder Thailand's wealth inequality has skyrocketed since the coup.

Instead of banning on-line sales the simple way would be to require a person of legal age to receive and sign for the delivery.  When I lived in the US this is what my home state required.

 

My neighbor will be _____.  He relies on Topps to deliver his junk food and beer because his wife doesn't buy it for him.  ????

Good to see the ID requirement etc. in the T&C there. However, there's nothing on that website that I'd like or want to buy. Probably similar for other Thai manufacturers' sites.

 

I'd prefer to buy foreign products such as Wishbeer provide if I were in the market for booze purchase. As JonnyF says in post 19, "Stomping on the little guys and handing it over to the big guys". The 'big guys' being the government's friends, of course.

One hates to be pedantic but the 20th century has been and gone. 2000 was the last year of that century. 

This current one is the 21st century which began in 2001 and will finish in 2100.

This in no way contradicts the sentiments expressed in your otherwise erudite post.

Just how the hell am I going to carry 2 cases of wine from the place I order my wine from.  Looks like I will have to order it at the store, push it to the street and take a taxi home with it.  Glad my wine refrigerator is still fairly well stocked.  There reasoning just defies all logic, and will now cut those companies who had a fair market share to either fold or have to become store fronts, instead of just a warehouse distributor.  Sounds like some people felt they were not getting there cut and this is the way to ensure it happens.  Using the excuse to restrict youngsters from buying it online is just pure idiocy.

Isn't it, in some cases, doing the opposite by shifting it from the big online boys back to the Mom and Pop shop.  I am sure the online booze buying is done by people who don't have access to a nearby Big C or Makro.

 

Despite my comment above I do think it is a stupid and petty restriction.

I wonder if you can go to the store, make your purchase, then have it shipped back to your house.

 

For me it is very hard to get a good selection of wine unless I go on-line or travel a pretty far distance

I'm sure the online booze buying is done by people who like a far wider selection than that available in Big C, Makro, Mum & Pop etc.

As a non-alcohol drinker I  think the approach to alcohol sales is already absurd at the least.  You guys that like a drop must be furious at this ridiculous decision.  And blocking sales 2 to 5 what moron came up with that? All the customer has to do is flash their ID card o prove age.  No,  this is all about looking after the folks that supply the brown envelopes...plain and simple.

The problem with these stupid laws, very rarely are they rescinded, even with a change of government. Just look at the times you can buy alcohol in a shop, been around for a while now.
