Do Airlines Still Need to Charge Us to Carry Our Golf Bags?

With low cost Airlines looking at all the tricks to fleece us poor travellers, by charging us to book a seat, a meal or to charge us for any over weight luggage, now is the time perhaps for some help from the government.

How many times have you paid more in overweight surcharges to carry your golf bag, than the actual fare to fly internally around Asia?

The alternative is to hire the clubs from the golf club when you arrive, however that can set you back up to THB1,000 a round, which is impractical and expensive.

With the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) trying to encourage us resident expats to take holidays in Phuket or Chiang Mai, surely, they could get the local airlines to accept our golf bags for free as well.

Remember it is the government funds that are keeping these low cost airlines in business at the moment.

Alternatively, cannot the TAT subsidize the golf clubs, so they can provide us with a free set of golf clubs for our round of golf.

Golf Clubs in these resort areas cannot rely on just locals to book rounds, so the many Thai and expat residents already in Thailand are their key targets.

We all like to go away with our friends to play some great courses in other areas of Thailand, but can we afford to go?

I am off to Phuket this week, so will report back on the state of the golf courses there, and will find out how much they are charging to play and possibly to rent out golf clubs too.

The day is fast approaching  in cattle class when you will pay for your airfare fare  by your weight

It actually makes sense.Weight is fuel burned (the major cost.)

In Samoa some airlines do already as many of the populace are obese

It's probably never going to happen, but it would be the best (economically speaking) way of payment for what you actually use. But in this day and age of "political correctness" and "all xxx counts", it would be incorrect to "fine" people for their body weight, would it now?

This is some years ago when I was travelling from Bangkok to Chiang Mai return with a golf bag full of clubs.

I checked out the airlines' prices and 'extras' Thai was as usual overpriced, Air Asia charged extra for the golf equipment & Bangkok Air didn't, making their price the best of the three. No need to guess which airline I took.

Some airlines are already doing it. But you have to be obese, not just overweight.

Doesn't go far enough. There's enough room on these flights to shoulder carry your MIL on for free and all her baggage. A free hot meal wouldn't go amiss either.  Service isn't what it used to be in LOS.  ????

It would make sense to weigh the Passenger plus their Baggage, add it together and charge accordingly. Shifting kilograms around is what costs money, oh yes, and shifting the fuel to shift those kilos around!
