Alas, your points were already made, and many more, about 20 years ago, with of course solutions. Things seem to have improved markedly since then, despite all the rose-tinted rear view mirrors flashed around here, and despite the chorus of sneers that accompanied any helpful measure. To pre-empt the strawman: I'm not saying everything is all perfect now or is going to be.

 

Try to keep up; count your blessings for not having to thank whatever gods that be for delivering you from misery or death whenever you take a stroll. Misery or death, man. All those maimed and injured back in them good ol' days.

 

The primary whinge now, if we ignore the continual lying about the shade, really comes down to lack of seating where superannuated mongers might sit for free & drink Chang while watching, playing around and negotiating with the ho's. Exactly the reason City Hall took out a lot of the seating.

 

'Course, if that's so important, one can simply carry a portable seat that doubles as a walking cane. Many posters need a cane anyway, if not a walker, so no biggie, really.

 

OK, hear now A Californian talking across the decades:

For example: sidewalks in Pattaya, if you can find them, are depleted, narrow and chuck full of holes. Vendors and kitchens take up more than their fair share of space. Dogs lie on the sidewalks and toilet on the sidewalks. What they leave behind has been responsible for more than one accident. Motorbikes park and run on the sidewalks. Even walking areas on Beach Road are taken up with skateboards, bicycles and motorbikes. The situation is so terrible that many have taken to walking in the streets.

 

But it’s not only the sidewalks that are hazardous. The roads and sois are just as bad . . . impossible to cross the roads. Some crosswalks are provided but one have to be a fool to use them. . . . no provision whatsoever for sidewalks . . . redneck gangbusters on motorbikes breaking all speed laws in their mad rush down the road (They seem to do this with impunity). Motorbikes also like to travel down one-way streets going the wrong way.

 

Baht buses and tour buses are a real pain . . . angry hordes of them . . . get in each other’s way . . . load and unload in the middle of the street. It’s impossible to see around them. They weave in an out and speed along in a competition nature. Tour buses run along the roads like it’s their god given right to sweep anything and everybody out of their path. They also pile up in the center of the street to load and unload passengers.

 

Parking is another matter. Not enough parking space is provided. Parking is haphazard at best. Motorbike rentals take up a great deal of parking space this should not even be allowed. . . . The city should also be supplying parking lots and parking garages. . . . Parking meters should also line the streets.

 

So what is the solution for all this nonsense? . . . politicians and the police . . . must provide safe sidewalks and safe roads. They must take the idiots, the drunks and dope addicts off the roads. There are entirely too many vehicles of all types out there. . . . Then we could really concentrate on our public transportation system. . . .

 

Let’s face it, there isn’t enough money in our recession economy to keep up roads, build more roads, provide parking areas, employ more traffic cops and take care of those that are maimed or injured.

Guys when they did the last beach remodel in 2013 I knew 100% they were going to destroy a beautiful perfectly functional promenade....Everyone loved the old promenade including me......

 

Now the promenade is barren and sterile and not people friendly at all...

 

I really doubt they could make things much worse........So.........I think we can look forward to a better promenade.....Because the only way to go is up.......

 

I do have MAJOR MAJOR concerns that they will not put in any seating....
Even if they only spent 1% of the budget on seating we could have a great promenade again....

 

Lots more seating is absolutely required...

They could indeed make it worse. They could allow the boats to park on it like they did on the once attractive promenade to the lighthouse, or they could cut down ALL the trees.

 No money to be made out of Passing by cars so why a 4 lane rd? Pedestrians , tourists are the spenders foods ,drinks, shopping Etc .. pedestrians dislike cars , noisy stinky big busses etc pedestrians like good air and green and shades. Beach road make one lane vehicles only. Ban all parking on the sides. Widen the boulevard tripple the size and much more green more shades more benches..reduce the traffic reduce the speed. Nobody gonna walk besides a stinky highway hello !!

for a pedestrian to cross beach road is a very risky exercise

high speed vehicles, drunk or lunatic drivers, nobody stop at the red lights

(I don't even talk about the zebra crossing, nobody care about it) and so on

ALL THE BOATS are suppose to use the moorings at Bali Hai, thats why they WERE constructed....and recently speed boat owners were TOLD to SHIFT down to Bali Hai !!!

Indeed.

 

Walking down the steps with flippers and snorkel on is not easy. You slip, bash your head on the rail. Get knocked out. Emergency services come to check if you have insurance or money stuffed in your pockets. But there is no money 'cause the LBs were there first. And all the while the toilet is not accessible because you are sprawled across the steps. Farang can't get in and the LBs can't get out

 

Will put Pattaya in the news for the wrong reasons.

The lower floor of central is underground. One has to assume you go to the food court in your snorkel and flippers.

Not sure if there are underground toilets in Mike shopping

but the Mike shopping mall is closed to the public outside of the few opening hours.

 

The underground toilets in the royal garden plaza are open to the public 24\24

the access being from the open escalator near the sidewalk and not from inside the shopping mall itself

They removed all the old seats, that lasted 20 years, and now we get the new improved seats, and after 3 years, here is what they look like. City Hall certainly knows how to waste money.
