Interesting, the UK and US are pushing "get back to work to kick start the economy" and Thailand is pushing "more holidays to kick start the economy".

Sabai sabai, just swing in the hammock and wait for a mango to drop in your mouth.

Quasi perpetual holidays can work wonders, but only if associated with UBI, or Universal Basic Income, a new socialist pet project actually experimented in the West.

Thailand could credit every citizen's bank account with, say 10,000 to 15,000 baht every month, in exchange for refraining from working, and going holiday instead.

The money would be freshly printed by the Thai central bank, following the Western examples.

The result would be a rapid depreciation of the baht, which everybody has been hoping for.

International tourists would then come back in droves, and the Thais could go back to work...or maybe not...

The idea was first proposed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Ahh, the wise and benevolent oracle of everything is there no end to this man's skills. I feel another of his patriotic song's might cheer up the serf's whilst they sit in their hovels enjoying their next long weekend without money.....

However, he added, the government is concerned that people may not have enough money to spend if additional public holidays are put in place later in the year.

Civil servants will benefit while everyone else will stay at work, I know many people who worked the last Fri/Mon holidays, while only the chosen few got to play.

That’s one of the reasons why Thailand will never be a 1st world country, along with ones like Japan or South Korea! I remember the governments funny vision pre-covid to become a high income country within the next 10 yrs!???? The Thai “chivid sanook” mindset may be chilling (and I enjoy it, as I am not dependent on their economy), but it’s disastrous for their competitiveness.

This would make sense in an economy where people were still working but not spending (which has never happened in the entire history of economics).

The reason people aren't spending is because they aren't working or their wages have taken a nosedive. Good to know the disconnect between the government and its people hasn't improved one iota in the four years I've been here.

A really strange and unsustainable idea. More holidays will only make workers poorer by moving money to the rich in the country. There are only two things that can increase Thailand's economy and that is to increase exports and in every way work to get more foreign currency. None of this is supported by this idiotic proposal.

Think you will find there are 3 things first 2 as above and lastly remove the buffoon's in charge and get people who actually know their <deleted> from their elbow into these positions, wont hold my breath...

They do realize that in the real world companies commit themselves to deliver on time/perform services to a timeline?

The creation of these holidays, to appease the tourism sector (for that reason alone), can potentially cause untold problems to industry. Perhaps they should try to run a company and be ready to pay double time to those who are already committed. In certain cases, companies who have maintenance crews out all over the country will not be able to do their jobs until the 'customer' returns to work after their holiday. As an example.

Crazy, irresponsible thought process IMO.

It’s all nice and dandy to have more public holidays, but what good are those if no one has a dime to spend? People are struggling to pay their bills as it is, so I don’t see many of them going out to stay at resorts and spending tons of money.

According to the last couple of 4 day Songkran holidays the seaside resorts were doing  well hotels full ( the ones open ) restaurants well attended these extra holidays seem  to be  working along with the big Government discounts given

It is very sad to read so many officials spouting a lot of nonsense. Maybe good idea to look outside Thailand to recruit officials who can really help the country to weather the economic storm in a constructive and realistic way.....

Even some 12 year olds I know would come up with more constructive suggestions........but this is Thailand, hardly a surprise?
.......Looking outside Thailand will be 'losing face', so a big NO NO......

oh, surely you need to keep it in context - these are times of the covid pandemic.
In any case, consider who benefits most from the 'government discounts'.......

They will still have their wages to spend and the time off work to travel.
