Storm Noul expected to be downgraded to tropical depression as it heads towards Mukdahan

The category 3 tropical storm "Noul" was centred about 200km east of Mukdahan in the Northeast of Thailand, at a latitude 16.3 degrees north, longitude 106.8 degrees east, with sustained winds of 75kph, and was expected to hit the Thai province in the afternoon.

 

Noul is moving north from Salawan in central Laos at a speed of 40kph.

 

The storm made landfall in Da Nang, central Vietnam, at 7am on Friday, the Thailand Meteorological Department said.

 

It is forecast to be downgraded to tropical depression when it reaches Mukdahan.

 

The strong southwest monsoon prevails across the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf. Torrential rain with isolated heavy to very heavy rain will be possible in the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East and the South.

 

People in risky areas should beware of the severe rains that may cause flash floods and water runoffs, the department warned. Beware of strong winds by keeping off outdoor places, large trees and unsecured buildings.

 

The affected areas are:

 

Friday/Saturday: Heavy to very heavy rain

North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Lamphun, Lampang, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit and Phetchabun

 

Northeast: Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Mahasarakham, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani

 

Central: Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Nakhon Sawan, Lop Buri, Ratchaburi, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi and Bangkok and vicinity

East: Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.

 

South: Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun

 

Sunday: Heavy rain

North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Sukhothai and Kamphaeng Phet

 

Central: Ratchaburi, Kanchanaburi, Uthai Thani, Suphan Buri and Chai Nat

 

East: Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat

 

South: Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket and Krabi

 

Strong wind waves are likely in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. In the upper portion of both seas, the waves will likely be 2-4 metres high and more than four metres high during thundershowers. In the lower portion, the waves will likely be about two metres high and in thundershower areas more than three metres high. All ships must keep ashore until Sunday, the department said.
