President Barack Obama said, “Your job doesn’t stop until you are voted out or until your term expires.” Which isn't 100% true. The sitting president's job stops when his/her succesor is sworn in. So, Trump could nominate someone now and the Senate could take almost 4 months to decide whether or not to accept his nominee. Trump could wait until after the election and still nominate someone... even if he lost the election. The critical issue is whether or not the Republicans can maintain control of the Senate.
