Over 80% of Britons not heeding COVID-19 self-isolation rules, study finds

LONDON (Reuters) - Over 80% of people in Britain are not adhering to self-isolation guidelines when they have COVID-19 symptoms or had contact with someone who has tested positive, a study has found.

A majority were also unable to identify the symptoms of COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

The research raises major questions about the effectiveness of England’s Test and Trace programme as Prime Minister Boris Johnson seeks to keep a lid on rising infection numbers with new restrictions.

The research, led by King’s College London, found that only 18.2% of people who reported having symptoms of COVID-19 in the last seven days had not left home since the symptoms developed, and only 11.9% requested a COVID-19 test.

It also found that only 10.9% of people told by the NHS Test and Trace scheme to self-isolate after close contact with a COVID-19 case had done so for 14 days as required.

The government last week introduced fines of up to 10,000 pounds ($12,780.00) for breaking self-isolation rules, and are offering a 500-pound support payment to low-paid workers who lose income from quarantining.

The researchers said that financial support for self-isolating could encourage adherence.

“Our results suggest that financial constraints and caring responsibilities impeded adherence to self-isolation, intending to share details of close contacts, and quarantining of contacts,” they wrote.

Johnson promised a “world-beating” test and trace system, but it has been dogged with problems, regularly failing to meet a target of reaching 80% of contacts. A tracing app finally launched on Thursday after four months of delays.

Reasons for non-compliance ranged from not knowing government guidance to being unable to identify the symptoms, the study found.

Just under half the participants were able to identify the key symptoms of COVID-19 of cough, a fever and a loss of sense of taste or smell.

The study used data collected between March 2 and Aug. 5, and was based on 42,127 responses from 31,787 participants aged over 16.

As of Thursday, Britain had the highest death toll from COVID-19 in Europe, at 41,902.

Might be heresy to some but good on them.

  • Some European countries are reporting a rapid rise in Covid-19 hospitalizations, a “worrying trend” ahead of the influenza season approaching the Northern Hemisphere, said Maria Van Kerkhove, head of the WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit.
  • Hospitalizations have doubled every eight days in the U.K., and parts of France have reported reaching capacity in their intensive-care units, she told CNN.

With so many immigrants that likely cannot speak, read or write in English in Great Britain,

what do you expect? Then you have the 18 year old to 40 year old group who think

that they will only be sick and not die, so do not care, who are causing the 2nd wave.

Now its the start of flu season. Good Luck  UK, you need it.

Geezer

Then you got the covid deniers that say only if your old you can get serious problems.

A Dutch guy (read it in newspaper) who was competing from the strongest man of Holland was quite fit lifted heavy weights 38 y/o ended up on ICU in really bad shape. He recovered but his strength is gone lung damage.  So much for the younger having no problems.

But not to worry the guy with the clow face avatar will start posting how it only affects old people and they should self isolate and let the young people have fun.

UK started out on the 'herd immunity' path, introduced lock down to slow the spread and avoid over loading the health system. Virus still circulating, flu season arriving hospitals will see the annual rise plus covid cases, virus will continue to circulate, hopefully resulting in eventual 'herd immunity' but clearly there will be casualties. Why the alarm at rising cases, schools have reopened.

Herd immunity and hopefully a vaccine will clear this in the UK by end of 2021.

Unfortunately Thailand with neither are going to struggle moving forward. I got ridiculed yesterday for saying at least 2-3 years before restrictions and quarantine maybe is removed frankly it could be much much longer

The first 10 cases that come in unrestricted on a herd immunity free population will be simply catastrophic as it spreads like wildfire

Just because people are able to take a philosophical view, this does not automatically place them in the  'I don't care if I catch it' or the 'it's only flu' category.

No one suggested it did 473geo........as the heading says------your choice of course!..

Indeed as is lifestyle choice, think about the UK

How many get up in the morning, ride in a car or train to work, sit in an air conditioned office, ride car or train back home, maybe visit the gym for a bit of exercise. Through the day little or no direct sunlight.

Yep we all have choices, unfortunately wearing a mask maybe too little too late for some!!

I have posted this before but probably worth repeating.  I have two relatively close neighbours who contracted Covid.  Both have recovered but both had to be hospitalized.  One is pretty much back to normal but the other is still off of work and is a mere shadow of his former self.  Both men are in their mid forties and work (worked) for banks in the city.

People around here tend to follow the rules now although for quite some time, the commuters had little choice but to get on a train every morning and go to the office.  Thanks to home working now being not only possible, but actively encouraged (this week at least),  less people have to make the commute.

However we are surrounded by schools and colleges and down the road is Kingston University.  Try telling hormone heavy teenagers to socially distance and you will end up with the vast majority of them raising their middle finger  As we all know, between the ages of about fourteen and thirty the most important thing in life is getting laid as much as possible. It is this age group that are predominantly causing the rise in cases now and as the father of a seventeen year old at college, I can certainly endorse that.

You might want consider what happened in Israel when the schools reopened.

Why? Israel admitted already lifting restrictions in May to save the economy was a mistake - each country carries a slightly different set of requirements and circumstances, see the economic pressure mounting as Thailand mulls over a shorter quarantine.

What works for one country may not be acceptable in another. Schools in the UK are open cases are rising, what needs to be kept in check is not the number of cases but hospital admissions and death.

Hurrah?

The report that you linked to was dated 18th September

Quote

Hospitalizations have doubled every eight days in the U.K.

Now I don't know where WHO got their numbers from, but obviously not the UK Government website.

On 18th September there were 1,156 UK cv patients in hospital.

On 10th September there were 906 UK cv patients in hospital.

The lowest figure for hospitalised cv patients since the end of March is about 765.

On 23rd September there were 1,616 UK cv patients in hospital.

So the WHO announcement is totally misleading according to the UK Government website.

It has barely doubled from the low to the 23rd so it is definitely NOT doubling every 8 days!

Yes, it is increasing but not surprising with the number of cases.

https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/healthcare

I am actually amazed how few are in hospital compared to the number of cases.

From that I can only guess that the vast majority of new cases have mild or no symptoms.

No. Follow the science the rise in Aids, TB can be scientificly linked to illegal and legal immigration. The Brits are under house arrest but the borders remain open.

Because Israeli humans differ in a medically significant way from British humans?

Well there seems to have been some sort of problem - the line of the story here reads RULES and then the first line of the story says guidelines.

Perhaps 80% not adhering to self-isolation guidelines would have made for the better Title here. Guidelines are not rules. Even though some would like to make you think that they are evidently.
