At least two stabbed near Charlie Hebdo's former offices in Paris

PARIS (Reuters) - At least two people were stabbed on Friday near the former offices of the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine in Paris that was attacked by Islamist militants over five years ago, in an incident anti-terrorism police were investigating.

 

Paris police said one person had been arrested. France Info radio said a second suspect was also in custody.

 

Prime Minister Jean Castex had earlier said four people had been stabbed, but a police source later told Reuters the number of people wounded was two, one of them seriously.

 

“I was in my office. I heard screams in the road. I looked out of the window and saw a woman who was lying on the floor and had taken a whack in the face from what was possibly a machete,” a witness told Europe 1 radio.

 

“I saw a second neighbour on the floor and I went to help.”

 

Paris police said one person had been arrested near the Bastille opera house. Europe 1 quoted police officials as saying the suspect was 18 and known to security services.

 

One police source said a machete had been found at the scene. Another police sources said a meat cleaver had been found there.

 

The national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said it was investigating the case.

 

TRIAL UNDER WAY

 

Fourteen people went on trial in Paris on Sept. 2, accused of being accomplices in the attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in January 2015 that killed 12 people.

 

The court heard that they had sought to avenge the Prophet Mohammad, nearly a decade after the weekly published cartoons mocking him.

 

Police moved Charlie Hebdo’s head of Human Resources from her home this week after threats against her life.

 

On Friday, TV footage showed ambulances, fire trucks and police cordoning off the area around Charlie Hebdo’s former offices.

 

Local authorities asked people to avoid the area and said a police operation was under way in a northeastern district of Paris. Deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire tweeted that police were hunting a “potentially dangerous” individual.

 

The Paris metro closed lines in the area and school children were initially kept inside in an area around the attack, a city hall official said.

 

France has experienced a wave of attacks by Islamist militants in recent years.

 

Bombings and shootings in November 2015 at the Bataclan theatre and other sites around Paris killed 130 people, and in July 2016 an Islamist militant drove a truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, killing 86.

The main suspect has not been named, but Mr Darmanin said he arrived in the country three years ago "as an isolated minor" of Pakistani nationality.

The minister added that the suspect was not known for being radicalised, but had a previous arrest for carrying a screwdriver.

Police said they arrested the main suspect in the nearby Bastille area. Shortly afterwards a man said to be from Algeria was also detained.

Latest French criminological stats proved that stabbing was ranked at 34% for all armed attacks.

In other words, some 120 daily stabbings became a trend. This figure is based on purely public attacks: means no attacks between relatives.

 

It can also be proven statistically that at least a few of these average 120 daily stabbings will/should happen close to the previous offices of Charlie Hebdo.

 

It’s not yet sure that stabbing perpetrators can read books, or watch movies with subtitles.

You leave out the demographics of those  perps.

It is well known who is responsible for a disproportionate amount of violent crime in Paris.

Please save your political rhetoric for those who are not naive.

No, I was just wondering. Been sort of stabbed once (well, more like slashed). Took a while to register, then hurt like hell. I'm kinda at a loss as to what's the difference in your mind? Is there a different legal definition or something? Is it considered more life threatening? Or, perhaps, more dramatic?

The attack is being investigated by specialist anti-terror prosecutors who have opened a probe into charges of 'attempted murder related to terrorism' and 'conspiracy with terrorists.'

 

Not sure why you implement a political rhetoric if you address the sociologic and criminological facts as details.

Precision about the "stabbing"

I know this is probably a foolish thing to say, but at 76 years old living in Thailand, I still carry and use screwdrivers most days around the land and my workshop.

 

When I used to work as an engineer I carried toolboxes that had screwdrivers ranging from jewellers to ones with a 12 inch blade, cutters, saws and open blades too. I can put my hand on 3 screwdrivers on my desk alone.

 

In my kitchen I have 2 meat cleavers and in my tool cupboard I have a couple of machetes.

 

Most of us posting on here will have similar things floating around the house and workshop/garage. This is not to say that they would be used for nefarious purposes, but they are there.

Both victims were journalists working for Premieres Lignes. An independent agency making investigations on big pharma, government corruption, war crimes, etc.

 

The agency was next to the previous offices of Charlie Hebdo.

 

Not yet confirmed if Ali, the Pakistani took them wrongly for Charlie Hebdo workers or he was asked to do the attack for others.

 

In the meanwhile, 5 other men were arrested with links to the 2 perpetrators at the crime scene.
