Police and Sawang Boriboon rescue services were called to the beach near Walking Street at 7 pm last night after a body was seen floating in the sea.

A boat was used to bring the body to shore as a crowd of Thai and foreign tourists gathered, reported Sanook.

The deceased was wearing only a swimming costume and was Mr Johannes, aged 74.

His wife Sukjai, 41, was soon on the scene in floods of tears.

She was comforted by members of the public seeing her terrible distress.

She said that her husband, a man from the Netherlands, had told her he was going for a swim in the sea.

He had been gone for hours and she had filed a report with the Pattaya police. She said she was particularly worried for him because he had suffered an accident recently.

Police determined there was no foul play and the body was taken for an autopsy at the Police Hospital.

not a great time to go swimming, in the dark and on a mostly deserted beach

"He had been gone for hours and she had filed a report with the Pattaya police"

My interpretation is he went during daylight hours. I have been wrong in the past though.

as opposed to swimming in what  ?

Formal attire, more suitable for a drowning perhaps.

Possibly trying to say he deliberately entered the water as opposed to falling in or being pushed in

Samtab..............you added a ha ha emoji to the first post..........just wondering what was funny about the guys demise?

Samtab has previous. For example, he also thinks the destitute and homeless man from Sukhotai who traveled to Ko Larn desperately searching for his daughter is a hilarious story.

As opposed to being in street clothes, which would indicate he wasn't swimming on purpose.

I doubt he actually was swimming by the time it had gone dark!

RIP

Condolences to the wife and as other posters have said, hope he made provisions for her.
