The five-year Thai Rice Strategy for the period 2020-24 is ready, Jurin Laksanawisit, deputy prime minister and the minister of commerce, said.

The strategy prepared by a subcommittee will be proposed to a meeting of the National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC) before seeking approval from the Cabinet.

The goal is to make Thailand a world leader in the production and marketing of quality rice and rice products, in four areas: foreign marketing; domestic marketing; production and processed products; and innovations from rice, Jurin said.

The rice is divided into seven types according to the needs of the three markets: premium market (jasmine and Thai fragrant rice); general market (soft white rice, hard white rice and parboiled rice); and specific markets (sticky rice, coloured rice or special feature rice).

Thailand is 6th is the world in terms of rice production, and 2nd in the world for rice exports (behind India)...so it depends how the define success...

...and they will decline about 9% this year in production...and may need to retain a little more than they planned to feed the people.
