Two hurt: crane truck rams multiple vehicles in Ubon after 'brake failure'

Two people escaped with injuries after a crane truck “accidentally” crashed into five vehicles, a bicycle and a motorbike on Monday evening in Ubon Ratchathani’s Mueang district, causing a traffic jam stretching one kilometre.

 

When police and rescue staff reached the scene of the accident on Chayangkul Road, they found the Tadano truck had rammed a van, a car, three pick-up trucks, a motorcycle and a bicycle.

 

According to the police report, the riders of the bicycle and motorbike, aged 51 and 57, were injured. The bicyclist had a few body wounds, but the motorbike rider had both wounds and a broken leg.

 

Truck driver Amorn Nualkrom, 52, told the police he was driving from Metro Town village to his office when he came upon a line of traffic that had stopped.

 

He pressed on the brake pedal but the truck failed to stop or slow down, so he decided to immediately turn onto the left lane, which had few vehicles.

 

That's when the accident happened. 

 

Officers nevertheless took him to a police station for an alcohol check.

so he has never heard of a hand brake, lack of servicing plus driver negligence are the biggest reasons for these accidents but the good old, "brakes didnt work" is the standby excuse they always get away with because the police refuse to actually check the brakes

Disgraceful this is allowed to carry on unchecked, could have hit a tour coach or a school bus with many casualties, already this week we have seen reports of multiple deaths from a tour coach that those on board claimed the driver had been asked to slow down and one passenger stating he had moved downstairs due to fear,

vocational drivers must be held responsible for there actions and do there employers really not care or think about bad publicity and the negative effect it has on there business?

In all my time running trucks in the UK,never,ever had one with brake failure,

dodgy brakes yes,but fixed ASAP,some of these stories I just don't believe,

there's too many brake failures,the drivers use this as an excuse,because

none of them would own up to lack of attention,looking at the phone,and

the other things they get up to while driving, do the Police ever check that

the brakes have actually failed..........

Maybe he did brake, but I'm sure that many Thais haven't the faintest idea about safe breaking distances. Just look at how many tailgate at 120. Especially passenger vans. No clue at all.

Better than a Grand Slam.

I rammed something last night, better than a grand slam even, no injuries or legs were broken during the process ????

The Police would not know how to check the brakes!!!!

Absolutely correct, People are still under the misconception that the air pressure 110 psi applies the brakes, wrong the pressure keeps the brakes off, and apart from the pressure gauges, there is a warning buzzer that sounds if the pressure drops to 80 psi, the emergency brake operates by gently pulling on the air hand brake. It is possible to release the brake actuators by screwing in the large bolt on them for towing etc. This is a Japanese crane had it been Chinese then I have experience air brake pipes connected to the wrong outlet on the spool block from new, vehicle width to narrow for height widened 30cm each side, 3 months on R&D before it was legal,  luckily the crane inspector in OZ found the problem before it was allowed registration. (I am an ex crane & truck technician)
