Britons would pay more tax for a fairer society as COVID-19 exposes inequality

As long as that fairer society does not require me to work 80 hours a week and pay additional taxes so that a number of so called ‘poverty-stricken’ can lounge around at home watching tv.

But you are happy to pay taxes for the Nasty Party to funnel them into their and their friends' bank accounts in obscure, far away places?

A global comparison would tell you that the UK is a reasonably fair socialist country and the article is an opinion from a female head of a ‘Women’s Budget Group’.

Please show us that global comparison.

Incorrect assumption with your first statement.

And with reference to your request for global comparison:

What is a fair society? One where a person who works 40 hours per week gets the same as anyone else working a 40 hour week? Everyone gets the same annual leave entitlement? Everyone gets to live in an affordable house, defined as 70% of average market price...or perhaps in a Government built block of flats. No one owns anything, no one inherits anything, any excess on death goes to the government, houses are not transferable to children.

Save me. Or perhaps shoot me.

Sounds a bit like Marx and Engel!

Animal Farm, all the animals are equal but the pigs are more equal. Up the revolution comrade! 555!

The 32 million tourists that visit the UK predominately come because of Royalty and UK history.

You are conflating too separate things, and neither are anywhere close to being the predominant reason why tourists visit.

If the royal family disappeared tomorrow, history buffs would continue to visit. Standing outside Buckingham Palace for a few minutes is one of the things on the list for a certain diminishing category of visitor the first time they visit London, but shopping, visiting family or friends, and entertainment are the things that attract most modern visitors.

These days, Grime music and Harry Potter are bigger draws than the royals.

The cost of the Royals is miniscule to the amount of revenue they attract through tourism

That may or may not be true, but any calculation should be based only on the number of visits that would not happen if there was not a sitting royal family.

If we could arrange some sort of bus accident, involving the entire extended royal family, in a Parisian tunnel, the resulting conspiracy theories would fuel both the tourist industry and the Daily Mail for decades to come.

Get Amazon to start paying more first

It would simply be transferred to sellers and the prices would go up, so you'd end up paying.

In the tax hell I come from (Finland) the purchasing power is among the lowest in Europe due to these socialist ideas and the murderous income taxes.

Ok. Set a minimum tax rate that everyone must pay, and allow people to voluntarily pay a higher rate to help create a fairer society.  Something tells me that the entire country will be paying the minimum rate.  "Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie", and all that.

At the heart of the new economy is a recognition of society's reliance on paid and unpaid care work - most of which is done by women - and the need to distribute this equally.

Proposals include introducing free social care, free childcare, equal sharing of parental leave, a fairer minimum wage, a universal basic income for retired people and reducing the working week to about 30 hours.

Can't see men suddenly becoming caring angels and there's no such thing as "free" social care or childcare. It's all someone else's money.

How does it get paid for if people are working less hours and businesses go broke?

Lots of things are 'always somebody else's money'.

Its all a matter of priorities.

Other people's childcare is on none of my priorities. Too many people in the world already, and it should cost parents more to have them so they have less, IMO.

I have paid tax in the UK for the whole 55 years of my working life, a lot of it at the higher rate. Enough already. I resent having to pay for the stupidity of politicians and for a socialist society that allows the lazy and the criminal to thrive on taxpayers money and a massively inefficient NHS to suck in ever more billions each year.  The UK is a basket case and can sink for all I care.  No more tax.

i pay tax in UK and i get nothing in return so why pay more?i cant see its very reproductive to tax people even more when large segments of the population have chosen to live off benefits in a pre covid economy that had full employment unless you chose to opt out.there are needy people but they seem to be in the minority.we can question many types of taxation in UK tv licence is another hot potato,CGT,the council tax we pay local gov each mnth and so on.what is a major problem and is ignored is the fact local govt, nat govt have cast iron pensions that we pay for and they perform badly even if they performed well what give s them the right to take our money to pay for their pensions?the council tax in my area-30% goes to paying their pensions!the services we receive are poor too.the garbage collections a good example,we could go on and on  but we are highly taxed on everything, hose sale tax agggh inheritance sales tax on everything we buy VAT at a high rate, how much more can we be taxed and all the covid spending who will pay for that ?yep the tax payer!

I’m all for tackling ‘entitlement’ but let’s do it across the board.

I doubt you have the faintest idea how many handouts Britain’s wealthy receive.

But you were ok with bailing out the banks and financial services industry?

Surely it should have been the shareholders who were expected to dig that lot out the hole they had created.

Oh yeah. Profits are private but loses are public and the poor are scroungers.

Don’t sink the UK just yet and definitely not the NHS.

You don’t know what’s ahead of you, a dash home to ‘nanny’ might yet be necessary.

As I would be entailed to do, having paid in for so many years. I would feel absolutely no guilt about that.  The layabouts who have never worked should be the ones feeling guilt, about using a welfare state they they have never contributed to.
