Why does the BTS Skytrain breakdown?

I normally wait a couple of minutes max at the platform during rush hour, but just had to wait about 10 minutes. I looked down the track and the train was not even at the station before the station I got on at yet.

 

This got me thinking, what are some reasons the BTS Skytrain is delayed and breaks down?

 

Sadly some people fall sick occasionally which is totally natural, but mechanically how can a skytrain that simply runs on electricity break down? (I am genuinely curious here, not trolling).

I find the BTS and MRT very efficient 99.9% of the time. Do you actually use them? (Do you actually live in Thailand)

PS;  For non brits.  Both the above were reasons given in the past by British Rail for delayed/cancelled trains!

Really ? Electricity powers the motors...yes there are motors and moving parts like gears and axles and such...amazing Thailand. Tracks also require maintenance and the electricity must be transmitted and regulated effectively before it gets to the train motor. All potential points of failure. It's not like an LED light where electricity flows and it glows.

BTS is a mess ! Utter shambles  failed outlived it's time

What are you droning on about? The BTS and the MRT are fantastic. Super efficient, almost always on time, fast, super clean and crazy convenient for beating traffic on the overly congested roads of Bangkok. I love the BTS and use it every chance I get. 

 

You want to experience broken down and outdated? Try the BART in the SF Bay area. Masses of homeless people hanging out everywhere, urine on the platforms and even in the cars. Graffiti everywhere. A system completely out of control.

First of all, the BTS is based on German and Canadian technology. Secondly, the BTS trains are controlled from the central control room by computer, not by individual drivers who are only there to watch the doors. The Monorail trains will be completely driverless. The central computer estimates the number of passengers requiring collection at each station at any given time and then controls the interval of the trains arriving at each station. At peak hours the time between trains is around 2.5 mins. Off peak, late night etc., when passenger demand is low, the interval can be 10 minutes. Occasionally there is trouble with communication due to illegal use of the bandwidth on the frequency used by BTS/Bombardier. In the early days it was due to a taxi call station using the same frequency. BTS had to change to a different communication band. The BTS runs very well compared with many other mass transit systems in the world, just do the research.

Yep, I can recall many a happy hour waiting for a through Northern Line train on the Barnet Branch platform at Camden Town, to the sound of frequent trains rumbling through the tunnels to the Edgware Branch platform. That was during the era when the Northern Line was dubbed the Misery Line by the Evening Standard newspaper!

The BTS system has a very good record and is very professionally run by well trained employees.
