beachproperty Posted October 10, 2020 Share Posted October 10, 2020 although I didn't get it done in Chiangmai I built a house in Rayong and had the window manufacturer make me double pane windows with 12 mm glass (for sound proofing and insulation). Am very happy as the house is quiet and barely hear the road noise (On a busy beach road). You have to look for windows that reflect the heat from the sun. Double glazing alone will not change this. In respect of insulation they will bring something if the other parts of your house or condo are insulated too. That they really help a lot they need to be on the outside of the window - but they will not hold very long then. So like you I enjoy the increased privacy. beau thai Posted October 11, 2020 Share Posted October 11, 2020 I had bedrooms double glazed but to keep out sounds- swimming pool kids, soi dogs etc. Works well with the right gap between panes. scotty4243 Posted October 11, 2020 Share Posted October 11, 2020 Installed double glazing and double thick thermal block in our house in CNX, it was expensive but I think worth the cost in quietness and heat / cold retention and also keeping the temperature down, we also insulated the roof space!. My house was fitted with the usual poor quality (Chinese I believe), leaky, sliding plastic windows (the alloy ones aren't any better) - I changed them as part of a complete refurb. I fitted UPVC windows and doors - the windows are all double glazed with 6mm and 4mm low e glass and argon filled cavities. My aim, apart from the general refurb and re-model was to reduce heat penetration, noise and to stop the damned Jing Jocks simply walking under the rubbish brush seals on the old windows. I still have the ceiling to insulate but there is certainly a reduction in heat penetration but I can't say that's totally down to the windows as I also installed an inner thermal block wall with reflective foil in the cavity. Noise is way down and the Jing Jocks are gone. A bonus is that security is greatly impoved. However, quality windows and doors are more expensive in Thailand than they are in other countries so unless you have a big problem or are planning a refurb - don't expect any payback in your lifetime. You really need a reason to carry out such a change. For me, as I say, it was part of a planned refurb/re-model and I had problems with dogs barking at night and critters getting in. When I talk about poor quality Chinese windows, it must be remembered that the weather in Thailand is nowhere near as extreme as it is in Europe for example so whilst they are rubbish in all respects, there is no need for them to be up to the standard of European windows. That said, I'm a believer in 'if its worth doing, its worth doing right. The windows and doors in my house will never need painting and they should outlast the concrete fabric of the house. You really need a reason to make such a change but if its simply to save a little on your aircon and you're happy with all other aspects, I think you'll be disappointed. 4 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I did the same with my computer/listening- room, where I most of the day stay. It was a balcony between living and sleepingroom, so, if you like to sit there, always warm. I let them build 2 walls 10 cm apart with glasswool in between with 2 windows/frames, and have the same good experience with sound and heat from outside. The only thing you have to consider is the ceiling that is only separated from the roof by plasterboard. Happy enough, my ceiling is 290 cm heigh. Do get your facts correct. Presume they meant to say UPVC windows as I've never heard of fibreglass being used in frames before and there are a couple of places I know of in Chiang Mai namely https://www.chiangmaiupvcwindowsdoors.com/about and https://www.windsor.co.th/ Have not used them personally so can't recommend them from experience.
