The British prime minister has set a deadline of Oct. 15 for a deal to be struck -- or to be within reach -- on future trading terms with the EU, and he’s stepping up his own involvement in the process in an effort to unblock negotiations. On Saturday, Johnson spoke to French President Emmanuel Macron and he is also preparing for a possible call with Merkel, according to a person familiar with the matter. Boris Johnson told French president Emmanuel Macron over the weekend that the UK wants to “explore every avenue” to secure a trade deal. Which suggests the PM’s self-imposed, mid-October deadline will come and go without too much fuss. But France appears to be playing hard ball over fishing rights. Annick Girardin, the country’s fishing minister, talked up a no-deal outcome – sounding every inch the Brexiteer: “Fishermen would rather have no agreement than a bad agreement,” she said. “We have laid out red lines: access to fishing grounds, quotas and the species that we fish today. Europeans must preserve their resources and their access.” Edited October 12, 2020 by david555

But a valid one, considering the number of times some Brexiteers, not you, triumphantly copy and paste the headline when they obviously haven't read the actual article. A reminder that headlines are written by sub-editors, not the author of the article, and are designed to sell newspapers or generate clicks. Therefore they are often full of hyperbole bearing little relevance to the actual article. To show that this happens across the board, The readers' editor on… a misleading headline on a sensitive story Quote Headlines and subheadings are there to attract and lead a reader into a story, but they should never mislead about what is in the text. The Guardian broke that rule in an acutely sensitive area of reporting about the investigation into the death of Mark Duggan Moral; posters should never rely on the headline; always read the text before posting. That way they'll know whether or not the article says what they claim it does!
