Death toll rises to 16 as floods continue in Kingdom

Flash floods killed another five people in the Kingdom while more provinces continue to face challenges caused by heavy rain. General Khieu Sopheak, Ministry of Interior spokesman, said yesterday the five who died from drowning were in Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Banteay Meanchey, Kandal and Kampong Thom provinces, and ten more provinces are hard-hit by the floods including Pailin, Preah Vihear, Kampong Chhnang, Stung Treng, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Siem Reap, Pursat, Kampong Thom and Kampong Speu.

 

According to local media, a young girl in Pursat lost her life in the floods bringing the Kingdom’s death toll to 16, following Sunday’s report by the National Committee for Disaster of 10 confirmed deaths.

Battambang and Pursat governors said their provinces have received the most damage. Nguon Ratanak, Battambang governor, said yesterday that nearly 2,000 families across the province were affected with houses damaged by flash floods. The provincial authorities are cooperating with police to evacuate all affected villagers to a safe place. All the major streams including Sangke, Bavel and Dauntry  rivers are flooding, said Ratanak.
