Proposal to cut tourist quarantine to 10 days in pipeline

Thailand's deputy PM and health minister was basking in praise after the WHO singled out the country for its strong leadership in response to the pandemic.

 

Now the Thai health authorities are preparing to recommend to the cabinet that the 14 day quarantine requirement for low risk foreign tourists be reduced to 10.

 

Anutin Charnvirakul - who famously had an early pandemic spat with a non-mask wearing foreigner back in February - was buoyed after a team from the World Health Organization, UN and universities praised Thailand in a six point report. 

 

The country had good leadership following the science, adapted to changing situations, had good health care systems, experience from handling pandemics like SARS, clearly communicated and gained the cooperation of the public and had good coordination between departments, said the report.

 

There were also six "could do better" points that included the need for better digital information gathering, an improved testing and tracing system and recommendations to establish an umbrella quarantine agency to handle that issue.

But a smiling Anutin, who looked like he might lose his job earlier in the year after a series of Covid breaching gaffes and odd statements, said that Thailand had been frank and open and had hidden no data and had met every challenge the pandemic had thrown up. 

 

Mask wearing, hand washing and social distancing were still key and people should not lower their guard, he said.

 

He noted that these measures had resulted in a fall in the number of other respiratory and intestinal problems that had saved the health system a lot of money.

 

Thaivisa notes that no mention was made of what has been seen in other countries around the world - namely less hospital visits for other infections because the sick are afraid to report to hospitals. 

 

Dr Opas Kankawinpong, an infectious disease expert, said that two committees had looked at worldwide evidence about the length of quarantine required. 

 

It had been determined that almost no virus cases would fall through the net if it was reduced from 14 to 10 days.

 

In fact it would make no difference at all.

 

So this will be proposed to the cabinet within the next one to two weeks.

 

This means that visitors from low risk countries like China, New Zealand and Australia would only have to quarantine for ten days rather than a full two weeks, reported Daily News.

How many coundry is low risk? Zero where normaly coming tourist! Ok China can always count low risk coundry coz have so many people there, so even 1 million case not show in "risk numbers"! 

Hole thing is aim to create big "China hub". Word what they love so much , todays new "hub"!

Seems like they discover positives during the second test in quarantine. Is that day 11, or day 13, seen both.

 

Can't see a -4 day move being a huge incentive for tourists?

 

But desperation leads to weird ideas here.

10 days, 14 days, doesn't matter. They need to get it into their extremely thick heads that people will not spend a chunk of their holiday here in quarantine, when they can go pretty much anywhere else in the world without having to do it.

Having people show a negative test before flying and a second one here on arrival is about all that people will likely agree to. In numbers anyway.

I know what your saying .....  in that a small step at a time is better than nothing,  and while i agree with that I still think most folks will NOT travel while ever there is any quarantine in place.   just saying. thx

Not even that. Most people not gonna risk testing positive on arrival and spending their precious vacation in a hospital abroad.

Are those the Thais that don't have to get tested to board the plane that these infected "tourists" are on?

Unless you are completely desperate to reunite with your favourite ladybody from Nana Plaza, then who wants to spend any amount of days in Quarantine on their holiday?

 

Finally on holiday and you have to sit alone in a room for over a week... It should be common sense that 99.9% of all normal thinking people do not want that.

Its just about quarantine length thats stopping people go. Look at the length of procedures that are needed to get to quarantine. Having these cut down and not restrict people will improve people coming.

 

10 days plus the procedures = 0.00001% increase in interests

If time in an hotel ASQ is reduced from 14 days to 10 days don't expect a reduction in price as 'we will give you extra quality'

Thai's are good at copying. They should just copy everything Singapore does re tourists a month later. Things down there seem mostly sensible.

1. Short-term visitors are not allowed entry into Singapore, except those coming in under the Green/Fast Lane arrangements, the Air Travel Pass or with special prior approval.

Every day a new announcement a new twist no wonder local Immigration offices and overseas Embassies have no idea what the actual rules are and that they are all finding different interpretations of the law but exercising extreme caution. Forget the tourism nobody can keep up with the ever changing rules and the hurdles of entry yet alone the quarantine prison sentence.

Because 7 days would miss a significant number of infections.

 

10 days on the other hand will catch 95% of them.

 

Very big difference.

 

The bigger questions is why only for "tourists from "ow risk countries". Would make sense IMO to reduce it to 10 days across the board.

Let under 65s expats come back with certs (cost about 8k baht in my country) and another test on arrival ins if the dont already have an international policy track and trace for 14 days
