webfact
Chumphon: Retired soldier on motorcycle dragged under wheels of petrol tanker Picture: Sanook Sanook reported on a horrific accident in Chumphon in the south of Thailand when a retired soldier was dragged on a motorcycle for several meters on a road after a collision with a petrol tanker carrying 40,000 liters of fuel. It happened on a road connecting Petchkasem Highway with downtown Chumphon yesterday morning. The twenty two wheel vehicle driven by Suphot, 51, who was waiting for police at the scene, hit a Honda Wave ridden by 70 year old Sgt Maj 1st Class Kraidech. The motorcyclist was badly mutilated after being dragged 15 meters towards a bridge. Twenty meter long braking marks on the road showed that Suphot had used his brakes but was not in time to avoid a collision. A picture showed people at the scene pointing to the registration plates of both tanker and motorcycle. Just this last week I’ve seen two motorcyclists pull out from a blind side road in-front of me without looking. They didn’t even turn their heads, just pulled out assuming the inside (left most) lane of a 3 lane road would be empty because it usually is (I was about turn left down the subsequent road). The amount of times I have to brake or take avoiding action for a motorcyclists astonishes me, I’m assuming there are so many others out there who see similar. I saw a motorcyclists collected by a lorry, the motorcyclists was swerving between traffic, cut in front of the lorry too early and caught his tail end - he was lucky he slid out of the way. A lorry simply can’t stop in time, even with good brakes. I’m not saying this is the motorcyclists fault: But knowing so well what unfolds on Thailand’s roads there is a high probability the lorry was travelling too fast and the motorcyclist didn’t look - either or a combination of the above and then there is the possibility of booze involved for the motorcyclist and amphetamine for the lorry driver. Again, I’m not saying they are, but we’ve all read too much news of very similar accidents when drugs and booze are a contributing facet. Gory stuff... all I can really say here is ‘dash cam’ - Get one if you haven’t (I even have one on my motorbike), ride with all your gear, head on a swivel.
