Popular Post webfact
Chiang Mai varsity student union scraps traditional activity as 'authoritarian' By THE NATION The Student Union of the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration, Chiang Mai University, announced on Monday night its decision to cancel SOTUS activities, as it is an "incubation of authoritarianism" in the education institution. The word SOTUS stands for seniority, order, tradition, unity, and spirit. This kind of activity is held normally in universities to help new students and old students bond together. However, SOTUS activities in some cases have allowed old students to violate the rights of new students. The student union slammed SOTUS as promoting authoritarianism. In addition, the union also announced cancellation of "seniority-forced respect" among students. I guess if they want it scrapped universally they have to start the ball rolling among themselves to show solidarity.

holy cow cm
Wow. Gonna go have a talk with my son about this since he goes to CMU. They have other ways to bond rather than that BS.

My daughter enjoyed it, but complained about the effort after. Edited October 21, 2020 by BritManToo

He said yeah, but maybe engineering will keep some of it in some ways as some bonding is good like being a big brother and sister, but he is not sure at this point how this will be spun. I don't think they will discontinue the walk, but they will certainly thumbs down on the points taken that if it resembles a conditioning like the Government and Regime like to be done, then they will definitely turn their heads the other way on it. These kids are so so anti regime and the other thing that it will and the feeling will never be put down the you know who. BTW. My son is not in engineering. Just mentioned it. CMU is actually kind of low key for this and the hazing anyway. Nice friendly school. My son on his first year played on the his department of Major's basketball team against all the other departments like a league competition. I think this is one thing they will keep as is a good thing, and fun for mom an dad to watch. The players are made up of all years. For the walk up the hill, unless CV19 stops it, it will probably go on. Bonding between all the schools. My 26 year old daughter did it, my son already did it, and I expect my little girl will do it next year for her first year. Now she will be seriously complaining. Popular Post NancyL
The walk up the hill is a good thing for those who want to participate. In our engineering college in the U.S. there was a very mild tradition that involved the new initiates to an engineering honor society polishing the shoes of the members. Pretty tame stuff, even for fifty years ago. Who wears shoes that need polishing now, anyway? I remember the story from my social sorority of the members of a fraternity who showed up one night as part of an initiation dare and "kidnapped" some of our members five years before I arrived and took a couple "composite photos" off the wall (those big expensive photos of all the members) and drove around campus, feeling up the victims until they stopped over a bridge and threw the photos into the river. Eventually the ladies were returned after being only slightly roughed up, but we'd lost two irreplaceable composite photos. Some members of the alumni association wanted to press charges, but the Greek association talked them out of it to avoid negative publicity because Greek associations were out of favor on a liberal campus during the Vietnam-war era. This stuff has gone on for a long time, all over the world and it's good to see it put to an end.
