The water level in a Nakhon Ratchasima dam has begun to stabilise after surging beyond maximum capacity on Monday, triggering a warning for residents in six districts downstream to evacuate.

On Monday, Lam Takhong dam held 330 million cubic metres of water, or 105 per cent of its maximum level, but runoff is now decreasing, Lam Takhong Water Operations director Chayutpong Amrungsuk said on Tuesday.

Floodgates have also been strengthened so that the dam can now safely store up to 37 million cubic metres, he said. The dam structure had remained stable and no water had been released so far, he added.

Meanwhile, no more heavy rain is forecast for the area, as Thailand enters the dry winter season.

“We are confident that we will be able to manage the water in Lam Takhong Dam for sure,” said Chayutpong.

Good news if the dam is full and no more rain is forecast, this is how it should be nationwide.
