A cruise ship could easily become a massive, mobile, Covid incubator.  Either one person joins with Covid and infects the other passengers, or it is picked up at the first port call and passed round the ship.

No-one is going to join a cruise where they are confined to their own cabin.  One point of a cruise is the socialising onboard.

This is total nonsense by TAT.   Nothing new here.

Does anyone know how many cruise ships are in operation in SE Asia at the moment.  I suspect not many, certainly not 60.

Many luxury liners are being scrapped.

I think a lot depends on one's personality...if an extrovert 14 days of almost total isolation will seem like prison, no matter the surroundings, and if an introvert, like me, it would be heaven.

Yes, but there have been many folks around the world who have already been under house arrest for the past X months..

treated like criminals for crimes they most certainly DID NOT commit.

(Its actually what they do to rapists and paedos in some countries)

And I never enjoyed being treated like a criminal, relegated to my own home,

though i guess for some, doing it in a hotel might be a slightly better novelty.

But no thanks, whatever way its sliced and diced, i aint travelling long haul just to experience that.

And If i told others i was contemplating this about Thailand..

..and knowing IF i somehow tested positive along the way..

I face the real risk getting escorted to a Thai hospital by guards,

(even if having no symptoms)

getting locked up in Thai hospital and most probably extorted at the end..

well.lol

tell your friends that and see what they say..

good chance they will tell you that you are completely Fxxxxxx nuts!!

This must surely be a very shoddy translation -- or else the figures won't make any sense at all.

60 ships with 650 people on board, or just under 10 people per vessel on average? Or does this perhaps mean 60 ships, EACH of them having 650 people on board?

And then these 650 people generate up to 2.1 billion baht, or about 32.3 million per person? Wildly inconceivable. Yes, if it were 60 ships with 650 passengers EACH, that would of course come down to a more reasonable 53,000 or so per person.

And which cruise ship exactly is normally docking in a single port for 14 days? Or do passengers already begin their quarantine while still being on the high seas?

great comments/post.....i could not get the figures to add up neither.......

Ahhh, did home quarantine for long term expats stuck outside Thailand but want to return ( who"s wives "own" a house or houses)  ever cross your questionable  brains?

Yes it was considered but dismissed due to known contempt and perceived lack of cooperation by many farangs already here. Refusing to use tracing app and using  mocking names in an attempt to deride the The Thai people. I've got a feeling these people locked out the Thai haters moaners and haters. Does anybody want them back?

I stayed at the Movenpick hotel, which was wonderful. Lot's of people complain and moan about the ASQ being like prison and similar nonsense. I saw it as an opportunity to get some peace and quiet. Catch up on some reading, meditation, yoga, tv-shows and work. Had a big 80sqm room, with two large balconies overlooking the beautiful gardens and pool. Allowed outside for 45 minutes a day for some exercise and/or interaction with other guests. Food was excellent, most days.

And the total cost of this was ??

thanks

A little over 70k baht, if I remember correctly. Plus a few thousand for additional roomservice.

Ok thanks, so given the rubbish exchange rate, that cost is around £1000 per week, not exactly cheap

Cheap, expensive.... it's all relative. I definitely don't think this was expensive. There are cheaper options available for those interested. However, I'd rather pay double and get a large room, balconies, good food and a good hospital back-up; for me that was worth it.

That’s as maybe and like you a big room is very important, that is why I usually take a suite with separate bedroom, lounge, and kitchen. So I can cook my own food if I want, and usually never pay more than 2,000 baht including breakfast in four star hotels around Sukhumvit area, and much cheaper than that in and around Ekamai.

But many can not afford to pay 70,000 plus for 14 nights in a government ripoff plus all the additional costs imposed on them for documents, testing and visa.

This is not that they are cheap Charlie’s, it is more likely that they are hard working people who have saved hard and just want a holiday to enjoy the culture and food of the land of smiles, or see their wives and children but a 70,000baht stab in the back  is to say the least unfair.

The government demands that travellers to Thailand get COVID tested before getting on the plane and again on arrival so the need for a 14 day quarantine is un-necessary when 5 to 7 days is more than enough, on top of which if the government want this length of time it should at least pay 50% of the cost, these people are after all coming to Thailand to spend every penny they have saved in the way that they want to spend it.

Not everybody is as lucky as you and I, we can afford these costs but If the government wants me to jump through many unrealistic and virtually impossible hoops to spend a little happy time with my long term girlfriend it could at least soften the landing

We can quibble about prices all day... but that doesn't do anybody any good.

The Thai government is free to put whatever, no matter how ridiculous they seem to some people, barriers and requirements up for people entering their country. They're free to decide this for themselves, as any other country in the world is.

IMO, anybody jumping through these hoops in order to "vacation" in Thailand needs their head examined. If you want to enjoy a holiday, go elsewhere. Thailand is not the place for that right now. If you have other reasons to be here, be it family or business, you accept the requirements and comply. If you consider them unfair; stay home or go elsewhere.

All this arguing about how ridiculous the requirements are and everybody having an opinion on what Thailand should be doing is growing really old, really fast. We all know Thailand is a semi-dictatorship, run by some of the most incompetent people on the planet. So expecting them to handle the situation based on rational thinking, science, or anything other than the direction the wind is blowing today is a waste of time and energy ...

Finally, I'd like to point out there's plenty of cheaper options available... I believe as cheap as 30k for a small room in some questionable hotel on the outskirts of Bangkok. Nobody forces anyone to take the more expensive options. And suggesting the government pays for half of these costs.... you can't be serious?
