Thai Health Ministry to tighten anti-COVID-19 measures at quarantine facilities

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is considering adjustments to the COVID-19 preventive measures at more than 100 hotels under the alternative state quarantine programme, as well as any use of common facilities by those in quarantine at such locations. The move is to avoid a repeat of an incident in Samut Prakan province, where coronavirus was found on fitness equipment and three people staying there, including a French tourist, were found to be infected.

Dr. Tharet Karatnairawiwong, Director General of the Department of Health Services Support, said today that, in the near future, arrivals from abroad, including Thai returnees to be quarantined at such facilities, will be divided into different groups, according to the pandemic situation in their countries of departure.

He said that, during the 14-day mandatory quarantine, those in hotel based quarantine will still be allowed to leave their rooms for recreation or exercise in specific areas, but preventive measures will have to be tightened up, such as social distancing and regular disinfection of fitness equipment, adding that some facilities might have been lax in the enforcement of the preventive measures.

New team to review criteria for state quarantine sites after signs of possible risk found

By The Nation

Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong

The Public Health Ministry has set up a panel to assess the 101 alternative state quarantine centres (ASQs) and see if allowing quarantined people to use hotel facilities will put others at risk.

Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, chief of the Department of Health Service Support, said traces of the Covid-19 virus was found on gym equipment at a hotel in Samut Prakan that was being used as an ASQ. The team has found that several points need to be reviewed, such as allowing quarantined people to use the gym, how many times must an area be cleaned to ensure all signs of the virus have been removed, etc.

Dr Tares said that even though all quarantine sites have been provided with strict guidelines, some hotels may not follow them meticulously. Hence, he said, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has to boost awareness and understanding to guarantee safety while ensuring travellers’ comfort.

One approach will be to classify countries based on risk levels to determine guidelines for treating each quarantined person. This list of low, medium and high-risk countries can be considered every 15 days.

As for the Samut Prakan hotel where a French woman who later tested positive had been staying, health authorities have instructed it to stop accepting new guests until the current lot has moved out.

So far, 101 hotels providing 13,004 rooms in total have been chosen as ASQ facilities, including two that are under review and seven are awaiting approval. Meanwhile, 21 hotels have been approved outside Bangkok and its vicinity, namely one in Buri Ram, one in Chonburi, eight in Phuket, one in Prachinburi and 10 in Surat Thani.

Maybe just using the Gyms for exercise like walking or running laps, should be all that

is allowed at these covid quarantine hotels.  The less the staff has to clean equipment

the better.  If the quarantine is going to be reduced to 10 days, there should be rules for

people to get one more test at day 14 or even 21 to be sure they are still healthy.

This virus is not a normal flu and should be treated as such.  The posters that used to say

that this corona virus is the same  as a normal virus, should go chat with people who have survived it and see what they say.

Geezer

A complete nonsense to have expensive quarantine prison hotels that are actually spreading covid19. No equipment that is touch able should  be used in quarantine. By definition people exercising sweat so infection spreads easily through them touching the surfaces of fitness equipment. Even running machines have side bars which need cleaning up after their use by a quarantined person. Better still people in quarantine shouldn't be allowed in the fitness centres.

Geezer

There are quite a few Thaivisa members who have said on this forum that they had the symptoms of the corona virus at the end of last year and the beginning of this year.

Wow, they are totally clueless.  Of course they should not be mingling with each other and touching the same equipment.

Meticulous is virtually impossible in Thailand~based on my experience.

So, the virus is now being treated as a foreigner immigration problem now~this can be used to give the Chinese an opening, and keep the freedom loving farang out.  This virus responds the same to testing and longevity no matter where the person is from!

Thailand is sounding more and more like China and North Korea lately

In other words " you F@@ked up " and now we are revoking your right to be an ASQ Hotel.

I have since SARS in 2003 never seen cleaning/desinfection material in any Thai hotel gym I've been to. It should be standard that every gym visitor cleans the equipment used. I use my own wipes to clean before using equipment as staff rather plays games on their mobile.

If you watch a few videos of those in quarantine - they are mixing up close with staff and workers in the hotel after their 5/6th day in quarantine and first negative test.

The whole point of a quarantine is you remain away from the population for a period of 15 days. But mixing and mingling with workers of hotels after day 5 is definately one source of a problem.
