dental question

I seem to have a tiny seepage of a bile like taste/substance at the crown in rear molar...

Is it likely infected under the crown? Maybe some swelling at the gum but no pain...

Can they just remove the crown and let it be w/o replacing?

Yes, I will go see my dentist next week, just want to be prepared...

Long time ago, the same happened on my wisdom tooth.

On my request, the dentist tried to save the tooth. But, finally had to extract it - it was never replaced.

(I think I lost my wisdom due to that ????)

Also, if the crown is removed and the tooth can be saved, you will need a new crown. From my bad tooth, I had the crown removed and had planned to get it seen to at a dental hospital. In the meantime, the tooth split badly and I had to quickly go and get it removed. It was removed by my implant dentist, as on that occasion, I had planned to get an implant on a different tooth. Instead, I have the split tooth removed.

I recommend getting an implant if the tooth is not good. They cost more, but the outcome is more predictable and will last much monger than getting the tooth recrowned.

I really would not want to go through a new crown... what are the consequences of removing a furthest to the back molar?

My lower back molar is the one I'm getting implanted. If you remove your molar, you really can't chew much at all on that side. My other missing tooth is an upper tooth in front of the molar. I can eat on that side. I have a couple of crowns; one done last year. There really isn't much tooth left on that side and once that goes bad, I will get that implanted also.

If you do get the tooth removed, you can start and implant about 3 months later, once the bone has grown over. If you don't get it implanted, the bone will recede somewhat. That is one reason that a bone graft may be required.

Two options. Either he can remove the crown and if not he can drill through the crown. In the first case you might need a new crown. It needs to be decided if the old one can be used again. But also when drilling through it and the crown is damaged too much you might need a new one.

Actually there is a third option which is what he alluded to in his last question" simply remove the tooth.

OP, you can do this - you just will no longer have that tooth for chewing. However extraction  of a molar is a bit more complicated than other tooth extraction.

Replacing a crown is very simple, it is if the post needs replacement or there is need to do another root canal that it gets complicated. Until you see a dentist there is no way to know.

It is possible the tooth itself is cracked in which case extraction (with or without subsequent implant, I think for a back molar mant would not bother) is inevitable. Again, you can't know until you see a dentist.

Thanks Sheryl... was at the dentist today - there is bacteria and probably some bone loss... we will know more tomorrow when he takes off the crown and a root canal lady will be there too...

The bone loss probbly showed up on the xray as a darkened area around the tooth. Is the tooth uncomfortable to bite with? Mine was like this for quite some time. I think that is related to the bone loss and less to the nerve which I think was quite damaged. Even though I had bone loss, there was enough bone there to do an implant. I'm going tomorrow to get an impression for the new tooth.

And implant surgery is more comfortable than a root canal. Theres just a drilling sensation for a few minutes, insert the implant and its done and its done. Just need to return a week later to get the stiches out. The only drawback is that it takes several months to do the full process.

They will look under the crown today... I assume there will be a root canal done... ?? The dentist said that when he poked, there was just a hole there where there should have been bone... and yes, I saw a black area on the bottom of the root on the xray... ??

Good luck to both of us...

Just went in for a better xray... it seems the root is broken and we will have to extract the tooth, rear molar... then what?

Get it removed. The bone takes a few months to heal. The implant is your only choice now if you want.to eat on that side. I'm at the dentist now as it happens. I Use the special clinic at Mahidol university dental hospital. You will need to make an appointment with an implant specialist. Maybe your dentist can recommend someone. The price could be 60 to 80k depending on the materials and work needed.

Up to you - leave it and live without or get an implant.

Is this wisdom tooth (3rd molar) or was that already extracted? Plenty of people live without their wisdom teeth.

The effect of not replacing an extracted tooth gone depends on the overall situation in your mouth (whether it means another tooth will then not have anything that it meets when you bite down, for instance, and how the spacing of other teeth may shift, and possible increased strain/pressure on some of them) Every case is different. Discuss with your dentist what the likely effect is for your mouth of not replacing it. That is certainly the cheapest option but you want to be sure it won't cause problems with the other teeth further down the line.

I'm thinking more stress would be placed on the adjacent teeth. The tooth next to one of my missing teeth has a filling and a part of that chipped. Presumably due to increased force on one part of the tooth. I can eat on that side though as it's not a molar.

Not replacing it will certainly increase stress on the tooth next to it. On the other hand, implant will be costly. Discuss with your dentist in detail.

Thanks - I never had wisdom teeth... [that I know of] it is the very back lower molar and my dentist pretty much said that we should wait and see as there is a tooth above but we will need a month or more to heal from the extraction...

I can just recommend to do implants in Istanbul rather than here, if borders ever open up again soon, as TH isn't cheap at all. Even I heard that most implants do come from here at wholesale prices... Was quoted average 60K per implant here VS 25K over there on same quality.

Thanks but after travel expenses and having no interest to travel to Turkey, it is in no way worth it for me... may not even need an implant... tooth comes out tomorrow

Good luck. Avoid eating on that side for a few weeks. You have a few months to think about an implant. I get mine finished in a couple of weeks. I will update about it then.
