MG unveils world’s largest solar carpark in Thailand

MG has opened the world’s largest solar car park at its plant in Chonburi province.

 

The SAIC Motor-CP Solar Carpark at the Hemaraj Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate covers 31,000 square metres with power-generation capacity of 4.88 megawatts.

 

The Bt177-million solar roof was installed by WHA Utilities and Power (WHAUP) at the vehicle distribution centre, which has capacity for more than 2,000 cars

 

The solar carpark will protect the new vehicles, help reduce the company's energy costs, and be a model for clean energy use across various organisations in the future, said MG.

That's a very good idea. Given the prices of solar panels are plummeting, it's a bit surprising how little of it is in use in Thailand, especially since there's a lot of sun.

I have solar for my pool....and I don't have storage. I want the house on solar, but unfortunately in Thailand, the prices of batteries, lithium batteries like Tesla etc., puts it way out of reach. Lead/acid are ok, but old tech.

 I have a house off grid with solar panels . I use 200AH truck batteries to store the power . Inexpensive and  works just fine for the last 3 yrs .

The solar panel/battery company will be owned by one of the dozen families owning Thailand. These cartels agree retail prices without the need for pesky competition.

Incentive to change from the norm is needed to make the average Thai understand the savings.

The cost of installing solar as apposed to just paying the monthly bill now is hard for some to comprehend.

This is a good idea. So many open-air car parks in Thailand. Solar panels can also act as shed for non-electric cars (EV) cars parked in the open. I think entities like Tesco-Lotus, where most of their outlets have vast open-air car parks, can adopt this initiative. Compared with neighbouring countries in the region, Thailand is leading with their EV agenda and this is one way corporate Thailand can help drive that agenda forward. Solar-paneled car parks can also help alleviate range-anxieties among pure-EV drivers, and add on to the overall charging infrastructure.

You have done well, in a truck here they do not seem to last that long.

Makes sense . Most people spend about 2 hrs in places like Tesco etc so they can get their car charged while doing the shopping and it would attract people to that shopping area also if they had electric vehicles.

Not me, twenty minutes max, fifteen of those chosing craft beers. Can't chaarge my Ferrari that quick!
