I went through AA Insurance Brokers who got me cover for a pre-existing heart condition, with David Shield, it cost about an extra 1,500 baht per month on top of the policy, although I do believe you have to be under 64 to get in the door, so you might be better off making earlier enquiries as opposed to waiting it out as I know a lot of insurers won't touch pre-existing conditions and dump you when you hit a certain age

What kind of price range was the total policy monthly or yearly?

Just to confirm thats inpatient cover only ?... and which company is that with?

Thanks

That is both inpatient and outpatient.

Bangkok Insurance. (not Bangkok Bangkok - Bangkok insurance

As with all insurance here best to get through a broker. In the case where I used it to cover my deductible the broker's help was essential as the insurer had trouble grasping the situation.

If under say 60-65 then I think this one provides better cover

I had surgery for a detached retina in Bangkok Hospital in Chiang Mai,. Five days in a private room. The bill was about 280,000. I had private insurance, 81,000 deductible.  Insurance covered the rest. I was very happy with the  doctors and quality of the room.

Just to give an example of price differences. For the gallbladder operation I went to Saint Marys first. They quoted me over 200,000 with a private room.  If I could have gotten a private room at the military hospital, I kind of remember them wanting nearer a 1000 a day, but military and police officers get first dibs there. I hear things have changed there somewhat as the government hospital is sending some of their overflow there now.

In the same situation , twice.   First time , a mild  case of shortness of breath, chest pain etc.  Off to ,local local hospital, very clean, in the new section.  Kept overnight, 2 blood tests, regular blood pressure checks, In general ward  with about 15 others.  Discharged  next AM. Bill  4200 baht, included 400 baht for food I never saw.

Second occasion, severe allergic reaction to something.  Ambulance to local hospital again. Distance about  2 km, cost 600 baht.. Admitted to general ward. Saline  drip administered. Blood pressure checked every few hours. Vitamin  tablets given. Discharged  next AM.  Bill  2300 baht.  (No charge for food this time, but never offered/seen any anyway.)

Wife had a CAT scan  at private hospital in  Korat  some months ago. 7000 baht for Thais.   (PS  Im  far too old to obtain insurance.  Wife has 3 seperate policies.)

Just a reminder that CT scans can very greatly in price at same hospital depending on what part of the body is involved.

how possible that an infection costs so much ? and is there any treatment that you cannot do alone at home ?!

Indeed serious infections can require hospitalization and IV drug use - which is not cheap.   We just paid 45 thousand this weekend at 2nd tier private hospital in Bangkok (and luckily infection had just started).  RocePHIN IV drug alone was 3,051 each day.

I spent a total of 5 weeks in govt hospital a few years back now, TB, most of that was in isolation, food was ok they had a falang menu, with CT scans X rays and Meds all up was about 150,000 baht (going by a better Ex-rate then) staff were great except for one matronly nurse who used to burst into the room at 5.30 am and shout GOOD MORNING! eventually got her to stop it.:cheesy:. A few years later they thought I had bowl cancer they wanted 10,000 up front in case i died on the table, was told the next morning you only have an intestine infection. ????

As I am in the 59-64 age bracket, all up it came to around 73,000 baht per annum with the pre-existing coverage, noting this does not include outpatient cover, only emergency (more than 24 hours in hospital) and elective surgery.

Edit: The cover is for up to 1.2 mil USD.

While the amount may seem a lot, I see it as 200 baht a day for 1.2 Mil USD coverage if I need hospitalisation, that said, I feel that I am worth more than 200 baht a day and looking at it that way makes me feel better ????

Perhaps some pain killers of sorts were amongst the lollies they provided you, hence no more lower back pain ?

Lower back pain is common, you need to strengthen your core, try some planks, YouTube has some good plank video's, you can thank me later.

The 2 nights accommodation sounds a little expensive, but then again, it would cost much more in a private hospital.

You really should look at getting private cover because if you have a serious accident or have a heart attack etc etc etc it could clean your nest egg out ?

Planks are good. Any exercise that strengthens your core is good though.

It was badly infected with loss of use of the hand. Required IV antibiotics and had to consult a hand specialist. Took a full month to resolve.

And no, none of that could be done at home. In fact the whole thing might have been averted if I had not tried to manage it at home initially.

The bite was very deep and hti nerves. And cellulitis set in.

Yes meant to say 3-5 million.

For an accident you could have claimed on your insurance as pre-existing conditions not an issue. For illnesses that may be related to your pre-existings, did you get full medical underwriting or moratorium basis policy?

BTW I think you meant district/comminity hospital not regional. Regional hospitals are huge tertiary care facilities that serve as referral points for several provinces, they are a step above provincial hospitals.

Thanks again, yes probably a district hospital. My UK policy has a moritorium on my pre existing conditions (diabetes 2 years to qualify, angina - 5 years to qualify) I am in my 5th year with them but still don't really hold out hope for a claim in many areas. I will reevaluate with a Thai insurer nearer to renewall but changing carries risk too at my age.

Thanks for all the input, very helpful.

Just to answer some queries my UK insurance has a £1200 excess and 30% copay capped at £5k which suits me fine as the main reason I have it is for something major. Premium is £1200 per annum but they have already prepared me for a 50% increase next birthday .It includes 13m Baht general cover and 1m Baht accident cover. They refuse to cover covid due to the pre-existing conditions. I will continue to pay for medical expenses while it's affordable, but if it's major I have the policy (hopefully).

I will check out the brokers mentioned nearer the time of renewal. I know the Thai insures seem to be less value for money so it's a difficult choice.

many good points here, but my main query was answered - I got off relatively light with the cost this time. I am just happy to be sitting here with no more than a bandaged head and panda eyes.

Stay safe and out of hospital.

We all have different opinions and experiences, as to quality and costs, and may I recommend before accepting advice you ask the question, are you answering from personal experience, there are many bad stories out there

I am very pro the Thai govt hospitals, both in BKK and Issan, on the other side I have experienced gross incompetency,  in hospitals here and received compensation without resorting to lawyers

I have had extensive surgery, many specialists and 13 hrs on operating table  for complicated state of the art keyhole surgery, my bills have been and continue to be very reasonable

Waiting times and queues in Government Hospitals can be very slow and frustrating, on the other hand on being delivered to the A&E at 3.00 am I was attended to quickly and efficiently

If you want more information, PM me I prefer not to discuss on open forum, but am always happy to assist others on a one to one basis

I have no medical ins and am  76 from UK

I am registered with five hospitals, makes getting looked at a little quicker

I am also under a palliative care unit, from a leading  Government Teaching hospital teaching pain suppression

I also have a living will that specifies no life support or resussation, and a lawyer within walking distance of the main hospital I now use, my body will be donated and the paper work is in place, ( my wife carries the donor card not me !) many hospitals no longer accept donations from foreigners, too many problems from families out side Thailand

PLAN FOR THE WORST AND HOPE FOR THE BEST, also Pray a little, God helps those who help themselves

Have a plan and make sure your wife can execute it, call an ambulance from the Bumringrad, and a very big bill is almost guaranteed, you can have the same specialist in a govt hospital, at a fraction of the cost

Many specialists at Govt hospitals work 1 day a week the rest of their time work in private hospitals so yes the same specialists. Asked a doctor at govt hospital if he could remove a titanium rod from my femur, "you will have to come to my hospital as you need special equipment"   I asked a  surgeon in OZ what equipment would you use "hammer and chisel" was his reply. true story.

other than personal accident insurance, which is well worth having in addition to your main health insurance, I would not recommend a Thai insurer especially at your age and with your pre-existing conditions. In fact I doubt any Thai insurer would cover you.

I am in contact with AA as someone mentioned they can arrange a policy to include pre existing conditions (at a premium of course) but I am covered till July 2021 so will re-evaluate nearer the expiry date.

I had my last drink a long time ago. Will AA cover my accidents?
