Speaking on CNBC Mr Brown said that signs were that both Thailand and Taiwan would lead the way in Asia where recovery is likely to be far quicker than in the west. He singled out Thailand for praise in dealing with the pandemic and said that both Thailand and Taiwan's domestic tourism market was getting going again. Vietnam's domestic tourism was also doing well. He said the world was looking towards Asia. RYT based their comments on a report by Infoquest (IQ). Popular Post darksidedog 50,816
While Thailand did do a very good job in containing the virus, until their paranoia about the virus dies down a little and the quarantine is removed I don't though see tourism recovering quickly. 64

Popular Post Dumbastheycome 5,697
Once whichever vaccine starts to be distributed the paranoia will be relieved. No doubt the desired well heeled who can pay to access early it will be welcomed even if numbers are not prolific. The general economic impact will have staggered financial viability for a quick return to mass tourism. Meanwhile the "Talk it Up" brigade will continue to offer the donkeys a carrot. 10
Popular Post madmitch 11,401
I've just looked at Booking Holdings' share price and was amazed to see it is almost back to where it was in January! Very surprised at this but I suppose announcements like this are there to inspire confidence in shareholders, even if most hotel owners are taking a more realistic view.

The potential vaccines have lifted optimism for travel worldwide obviously as people are dreaming of the day they can get away from this horrible year. However, until the vaccines are actually is in use and proven to work on a grand scale, then all of this new optimism is misguided and pure speculation in nature. Domestic tourism has never been a predictor for global travel, and domestic tourism is generally much cheaper and can be done on a whim. a 3 day trip takes very little planning and saving like a 2 week or more vacation which deals with ensuring the time off, scheduling the flights and then making the trip happen if you can meet all of the new post covid regulations that will be in place.
Popular Post Flying Saucage 3,407
This Agoda guy John Brown obviously has no idea about Thai politics, psyche and paranoia. He relies on what TAT tells him, I guess 11 5

The vaccine being fully effective and provided to enough people by mid-next year appears to be fully priced in especially since these latest round of announcements. I think a bit more gloom might emerge in January when the market realises that Biden is not a Corona silver bullet and the vaccination process begins to grind on (if it all gets approved). I guess the pent up demand/nervous energy of investors during these long months has got to be ameliorated somehow, partially explaining the current surge. Public health specialists believe that there are factors that have helped reduce the R(0) or rate of infection of the virus in Thailand, Laos and Vietnam - possible factors include climate (heat and humidity lower transmission), proximity to China may have led to some levels of resistence to the virus due to earlier versions coming through and even the prevalence of dengue fever which, according to observation in Brazil, has led to some protection against the virus. The fact that these countries do not have a refugee problem and do not have refugee camps on their borders also helps lower the transmission rate. But lets be sure about one thing. Apart from closing the borders, there is nothing that any of these countries, including Thailand, has done that would reduce the level of infection to that below a country like Germany. 6 9

He seems to be focusing on domestic rather than foreign tourism. Taiwan is a rich and well-organised country, and can afford to vaccinate all its citizens quickly. Thailand though? Given that the vaccines don't appear to stop transmission of the virus, it might well be 2022 before the Thais can open up to foreigners again. The Thai government's foremost priority (like all governments) is the protection of its own citizens, so unless they can really speed up the national mass-vaccination programme, I don't see much changing until late next year at the earliest. 2 1 2 1

Popular Post miamiman123 806
How is that recovery even possible when the rest of the people in the world like the USA, the UK et al are in desperate financial straits, and are in no position to travel even if they could? The return of airline industry is not going to be quickly accomplished if at all. Bearing these factors in mind, how is this return of tourists to any SE Asia country possible... Even if an effective safe vaccine is found.... it will be months if not years before safe travel willl be possible. Who is this guy trying to fool?
