Thai authorities admit "Billion Baht" quarantine has been massive cash cow for economy

So ASQ is costing the tourist 3-4,000 bt per day.  Probably about the same as a short-term tourist would normally be spending, but then of course he would be spreading around a bit more, and helping the wider Thai economy....

But there should be alternatives for those with visa extension who have their own place to self Q... but of course it would need to be properly policed.... and we all know how this could be "avoided"...

In a previous story Thailand was proposing taking advantage of the gaps in Europe caused by the pandemic, now they say quarantine is a great cash cow. Seems to be a theme evolving here of taking advantage for thailand of a situation at the expense of others.

Depends how you read it if you read it with a negative mindset then yes. But its basically just the government trying to bring out some good news that they are making money that its not all that bad ect ect. They do it every time like Thailand will be hub of or Thailand will exploit this. Its just economics they are a bit more honest about it then western countries. Dont  you think the western pharmaceutical companies will take advantage of the rest of the world (or do you think they will sell their stuff at cost) They are not as blunt as Thailand in their remarks but its basically the same.

???????????? 1.2 billion ?? Lol Are they kidding ?

So if that is the amount it has made and you take away the costs of tests and medical staff and then divide the amount left between the 180 or so ASQ hotels then it wouldn’t even cover keeping the lights on and basic staff in most I’m sure ! ????

It's amazing how many people are willing to be quarantined just to come to Thailand. It must be hell back home.

If quarantine makes so much money, Thailand might extend the period indefinitely so they can make more money.

And the more people who use it could see it being extended to enrich the few.

Huge amount for the hotel owners, probably affluent already, and probably paid a bung for the privilege of being an ASQ hotel.

Not much being spent in the economy when people are holed up there for 2 weeks !

OK, I give-up, I am confused and stupid or stupid and confused!

Is the country benefitting from the pandemic or sinking from  the lack of tourists?

Ok lets cut the <deleted> nonsense here; 1,2 billion baht divided by an average of 40,000 baht per person for quarantine (as most were Thais it is probably  a lot less) means that at least 30,000 people went through. In the last 3 months that is at least 1,000 people arriving per day... Didn't happen!

Another article today reported that 40,000 foreigners and 128,000 Thais have arrived since June, so apparently it did happen.

Your math is way off. By a factor of 3.

Here, let me fix that headline:

"Thai authorities admit "Billion Baht" quarantine has been massive cash cow for economy a small group of well connected individuals.

Thats right. The majority of Hotels and Resorts dont have the proper licenses because of ridiculous reasons and Thai Government demands, so they have no way of bidding for a ASQ. Very few got a "boost" out of this and certainly not the community either.

The head of Thailand's Health Service Support Department has admitted that state and local quarantine in Thailand has brought in a huge amount of money for hotels and the economy.

Dr Tharet Kratnairawiwong told Bangkok Biz News that in the last four months the ASQ and ALQ schemes had brought 1.2 billion baht into the country.

1.2 billion bahts ? Is it really a huge amount for a country like Thailand ? 34 millions euros ?

At this point in time for what they consider tourism purposes and for a country with no tourists for the past 8 months that is a considerable amount of money.  Money they would not have had if they had not opened up the visas to return.  Yet how much actually came from their own repatriated Thais leaves a big question that needs answering

"1.2 Billion Baht" So What? ???? Spread across the entire tourism industry - this is trivial!

This is small change in comparison for the income usually received by the greater tourist economy without restrictions that has stopped 99.996% incoming tourists.

Consider for a moment;

"The value of tourism GDP Thailand 2017-Q1 2020. In the first quarter of 2020, the tourism industry contributed around 539.2 billion Thai baht to Thailand's GDP. In that same period, the total value of Thailand's GDP amounted to approximately four trillion Thai baht."

Then some <deleted> from Bangers, a graduate from the Dianne Abbott school of mathematics no less, puffs his chest out to trumpet the good news.

According to flightradar24 site, 72 international flights landed at Suvanabhumi Airport alone today.  Each plane carrying 50 passengers will easily meet and exceed 1000 people arrival per day.
