Authorities probing why Thai woman with Covid-19 was not quarantined

Those numbers are probably low. I assume they come from people using the tracing app.

I don't know about Chiang Mai, but I have noticed that wherever I go in Bangkok, very few people (if any) use the app when entering shopping malls.

Apart from that, she is Thai. She knows the rules about quarantine. She knows the seriousness of the situation. She knew she was sick, but still socialised. Give her the hardest possible punishment to deter others.

A Malaysian friend told me that in his country, authorities will conduct random and surprise checks on premises - eateries, malls, shops etc. Those found to have not 'checked in' using the tracing app will be issued a MYR 1,000 (about THB 7,500) summons. On the spot. No exceptions. In cases where patrons do not follow SOP i.e. no physical distancing, not wearing masks etc. they will be herded onto a police truck and taken back to the station. And yet, they are experiencing their third wave now, setting new records of new cases almost on a daily basis, last month. Yes, one can argue it was sparked by a local election somewhere, but the fact is, even with such strict SOPs and enforcement, they couldn't stop a third wave.

So if Thailand thinks it can rest on its laurels (lax border control, quarantine procedures etc), think again. All it takes is just one unchecked case, and that's it. And given how people have let their guards down (not wearing masks, not using the app etc.) there isn't a lot of thing in place to stop a major wave.

Understood, but she is putting others lives at risk.  There should be a punishment for that.  If someone caught the virus due to her, and died, then that could be called murder.  Perhaps premeditated if she knew she had the virus.  Kinda like having unprotected sex with others knowing you've got AIDS/HIV.

Quite true. At this time, to be sick with viral symptoms, and ignore that while partying and socializing at will, is deeply irresponsible. There should be heavy penalties for that kind of wanton disregard for others. A person in that situation should self isolate, until they can be certain of their condition, especially if they have been in Burma recently.

Also, is the border with Burma, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia that easy to cross? And if so, why? Why have the entire nation sealed to air travel, yet allow people to just walk across the borders, without any real screening? Utter incompetence? And we thought the army administration was competent with regard to Covid?

Sorry no time to read all these pages, but antigen testing at the border would at least find the ones who are currently infectious. There is such a huge problem from the ease with which people can enter from Burma without going through a border checkpoint and so can avoid the time and expense of quarantine. So maybe we need spot checks of people in towns in proximity to the border to get advance warning on outbreaks, but how much would that cost?

An antigen test takes about 15 minutes, will detect people with high viral load, i.e. infectious. This is not PCR, which is time-consuming, expensive, and will also detect people who are no longer infectious. Antigen tests can be around 85% accurate, so there are false negatives, still better than nothing.

Some how i feel a contact with a farang will be the ultimate blame for her getting that virus.  Just saying

I venture to guess that she did what she wanted to do without caring as most of the Thai girls do. They do it their way without regard for others, nothing can come before shopping and fun.

Additionally, I believe they will find not one of her contacts tests positive as it will follow suit with all of the other track and trace cases.  It will be overshadowed by the protests and the need for security as if they let the cat out of the bag it will damage Thailands much coveted view of their own image.  She should be charged with damaging the Image of Thailand, made to wai, pay 50 baht and go become a nun.

Becoming a nun isn't very sanook!????

It is deadly if the situation is right and the host has other medical issues, regardless of age as you can see.  This young lady is just that, young.  Hopefully she recovers fast and does not end up needing the supplemental oxygen some folks need.  The Covid ICU unit where my daughter works in the US is now packed full of folks and they range in age from mid 30's on up.  As a traveling ICU nurse who works in Covid units throughout the east coast Area's of the US, she is just waiting on the explosion of cases that will come in the weeks leading up to Christmas and after due to the unnecessary gatherings forthe Thanksgiving holiday.

Hopefully  your daughter gets the vaccine asap so she wont be at risk and to family members back home. I work for an  airline and the airports were packed. Albeit all required to were masks in airports and on the airplanes.  Mixed messaging and weak government is to blame in part.  No mask needed on the golf course or to tweet if you get my drift.

The Thai officials have said all along that the virus is in the country. They have never said there is none. Just no reported cases. Lack of testing is a big issue.

If they tested the population surely cases would be found. Wouldnt  want to tarnish that covid free image now would we.  Quarantine is a big money maker

When did they open the land borders? I thought they are all closed.

After this incident, I think Thailand will close all the land borders and only allow air flights which are easier to control.

Thai tourism here at the moment is the most robust I've seen in perhaps 10 years. But yeah, this could change that.

Sophon said that 326 people had been in contact with the patient, of which 105 are in a high-risk group. They include those in the patient's condominium, her friend's condominium, the shopping mall, the entertainment venue and those in the vehicles in which she travelled

Why are they not making it public which shopping mall she was in , so that people  can avoid going there?!
