No.

I'm suggesting they were crappy tin roof beer bars some years ago, so could charge cheap prices, so tourists and expats overlooked their crappiness.

Fast forward to 2020, and it's the same crappy tin roof beer bar, now charging the same prices for a beer that you can pay in  gentlemen's club, with a/c, or a bar with live music.  No improvements.  No added service.  Just dearer drink prices, above the rate of inflation, and the same tin roof.

The days of tin roof beer bars are over, and it has nothing to do with covid.

Tell me what GC you can buy a 95baht beer ( like for like ).

Darned right, that 8 year old post hit the nail right on the head!

Oh, I be da man.????

In the one case, the Thai domestic tourist had spent 228 baht; in the other, the Golden Egg Layer, one of the wealthy Big Spenders responsible for all the economic prosperity of Pattaya, only spent 95 baht. The Thai complained about a mandatory supposed extra charge of 163 baht; the GGL, maybe 15 baht, 40 baht--or -5 to -40 baht if he'd taken the 2nd drink at no extra charge.

Now why would a Big Spender come onto an internet forum to complain about such an utterly trivial amount? But does he represent a unique case?????

Hence the GGL was advised just to buy from 7/11--which is the gold standard for pricing around here, after all. Any charge above the 7/11 price just can't be justified and represents a ripoff for which Greedy Landlords must be responsible.????

How can it be 2F1 when the price is actually far more than the price for 1 should be! I don't have issue with having to buy 2 beers but don't try and kid me it is some bargain!

I sometimes wonder how our TVF Accountants were ever able to fill out a tax form back home.

Anyway, our GGL wasn't actually being misled as he claimed, honesty not being a strong suit among our posters. Two other members verified that the "promotion" w/ prices and hours was posted on an easily read sign outside of the bar in question--and at other bars as well. Besides being skint, the GGLs often have a problem with their eyesight, as I've noted in other contexts.

The Thai similarly didn't notice the price of the *kapao kai listed on the menu but probably expected to pay a bit more anyway--just not THAT much, and with no alternative.

Just look on the bright side of life. Pattaya without the crowds must be bliss of the highest order. I wish I was there.

I would disagree. I walked down Walking Street last night. Like being on the set of an Apocalype movie. Very depressing. The crowds and the buzz are what make Pattaya exciting. Most bars i sit alone as the only customers. No thanks.

b/ What I said, but applies to Thailand in general.

c/ Meanwhile, more than a decade ago Thai developers recognized the underutilized draw of Pattaya as a nearby beach resort for Bangkok Thais, esp (among Thais, as BKK is where the money is), and the vast number of international tourists who visit, or come through, Bangkok who might well wish to hit a nearby, conveniently-reached beach resort. So, amid the chorus of very knowing sneers from ace TVF Economists, with cooperation from the Thai authorities they began development to start reaching this underserved market. It's proven a successful strategy that looks to continue.

If you lived here, you would know.

Point being, crappy tin roof beer bars were charging similar to GC prices, yet one provides a lot nicer environment in which to server the same product.

The days of crappy tin roof beer bars are over.  They were dying pre covid.

Will they be staying at The Dusit after the subsidy finishes?

However, the Thai owner of the restaurant stated it was a restaurant for foreigners, alluding to the fact foreigners are prepared to pay higher prices.

After they're able to get back in the country, I would suppose so. The subsidy has had remarkably little benefit for international tourists. You may attempt to figure out why.

Irrelevant, as it was after the customer objected and offered as an excuse. Some foreigners do actually spend, however, as I observed when I mentioned the Dusit, just as Chinese do.

What about all those high spending domestic Thai tourists?  You know, the ones not complaining to the police about the price of the food in restaurant here.  ????

They'll continue their spending. Examples have been given you several times already, though you've never waddled around to verify.

Continue spending, or continue complaining to authorities about Pattaya prices?  ????

Because he was one of them only for your trolling purposes, yet the objection of one your real Big Spenders, a true Golden Egg Layer, over on Soi Buakhao, was to a much lesser amount, absolutely and percentage-wise.????

As stated, but the whinges of our Big Spenders about imagined ripoffs and scams over trivial amounts are never-ending.

It's a news item on this forum, which is certainly not imagined.  Are you saying this big spending domestic Thai tourists "imagined" a rip off or scam at the Mister 99 restaurant?  Surely not?

You didn't imagine a news article. Good progress. This particular tourist, whom you've imagined as a Big Spender for trolling purposes, did imagine he was ripped off as the price of the item was in fact posted on the menu.

Hardly for trolling purposes.  I simply disagree with your opinion that Thai domestic tourists are big spenders here and will float the local Pattaya economy.

Certainly not all, but would you like to put a percentage on it?

Nope, as it's irrelevant. The baked-beans-on-toast farangs you're familiar with help the fleabag hotels and coconut bar survive, but not the better hotels, restos, and malls; similarly the somtam and sangsom Thais who help the street vendors and 7/11s. Each market segment makes its contribution. Pattaya's economy really took off with the greater appeal in the last 10 years to the domestic and international markets, however, and that looks to continue post-COVID.

Definitely for trolling purposes as you have no evidence to support any objection to the fact that Thai domestic tourists are the main drivers at the moment of what's left of the Pattaya economy. Nobody, esp TAT itself, ever said, implied, suggested, or thought that domestic tourism makes up for international tourism. That's merely a standard straw man argument to buttress the bigoted notion that only farang have, ever have had, or ever will have money and pretend that Thais are all poor.

As I see all the closed businesses here.

There's that price point thing again.

Not what I saw past high season, pre covid.  It was the quietest high season I have ever seen.  I'm sure many business owners, past and present, would agree.

Where was the great appeal of Pattaya, except for the cheap Chinese package holiday tourists?
