Stepping down before Dec 2 court verdict may be the most graceful exit for Prayut, reckons Pheu Thai

The opposition is calling on people to keep a close eye on the Constitutional Court’s verdict on Wednesday in relation to a case against Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who was accused of breaking the law by continuing to live in Army quarters after retiring.

 

Earlier this year, former Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong had ordered retired military officers to move out of their state-provided quarters before the end of February.

 

However, he exempted Prayut and Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, both retired Army generals, because of their “significant contributions to the country’s well-being”.

 

“This case is of utmost importance as the court is an independent organisation established under the 1997 Constitution to act as people’s representative in investigating any party impartially,” said Arunee Kasayanont, spokesperson for core opposition Pheu Thai Party’s leader. “The verdict will show just how independent and impartial the court actually is.

 

“However, if Prayut decides to step down before December 2 as demanded by pro-democracy protesters, then it would be the most graceful exit for him,” she said.

 

“Prayut is the source of all the country’s current problems. His failure in administration has led to economic recession, which has left millions of Thais unemployed and in poverty, while his government only seeks more loans and gives handouts to keep people barely alive.

 

“History tells us that the only thing Prayut is good at is using government officials such as soldiers, police and civil servants as a barrier to protect himself,” she added. “This has caused people to lose faith in justice and government systems, stemming from one person’s greed for power.”

In theory maybe, but to suggest it is so in practice is a bit far fetched.

Many of the nations problems wouldn't be here if things worked how they are supposed to.

They should be living in tents, if their contributions to the country's well being was the deciding factor !

Yingluck: illegally left the country and never returned to go to jail.

Politicians from that party should shut up about graceful behavior from anybody else.

One persons greed for power?? I feel that is a gross underestimate, considering those who have been appointed to other positions of power.

The behaviour of a person illegally removed from power is ancient history the behaviour of the leeches who carried that illegal deposition is today's news, do try to keep up....

What... like the local luxury watch retailing industry and the radio pop charts? Because, honestly, I could not think of anything else that these two would possibly have "contributed" in any way.

 

On the other hand I could name off the cuff dozens of things that they have done or are directly or indirectly responsible for, and which actually ERODED the country's well-being at one degree or another.

If you would keep up with the news then you would know that Thaksin's red mod is active again. They try to protest together with the students to demand what they call democracy.

Unfortunately history tends to repeat itself. We really don't need another 2010 disaster.

For all the people here who criticize Prayut: Please list all the previous Thai PMs who were so much better than him.

 

I agree that Prayut is far away from perfect but he is no exception. And personally I think many previous PMs were worse than him.

 

If people want a decent PM and decent and honest politicians then they should vote for them. Unfortunately many Thais, especially up country, vote for well known corrupt politicians or in case they were banned people vote for the children of those corrupt politicians. And then they are surprised when they end up with corrupt governments. Yeah, what a surprise...

Everybody who has a beef with the junta are protesting and rightly so they have power in numbers the red faction are a tiny fraction who have certainly not been shooting the other side

 

I think you will find it's the yellow side and their military backers who are todays problem and all the but, but, but Thaksin is nothing but deflection, it's boring, repetitive and about as relevant as the price of a latte in Moldovia...
