I wonder who the CDC is empowered to order around? Or just sloppy journalism again?

Not really pertinent to any country outside of USA as it has to do with community exposure, and if those affected are not incarcerated in a secure quarantine facility it will serve no purpose at all.

The CDC is not "empowered" to order anyone around.

But it is a widely -- and internationally - respected organization.

"Dr. Redfield informed Vice President Mike Pence and the White House coronavirus task force that the CDC will be issuing new orders on the number of days that a person who has been in direct contact with the COVID-19 virus should quarantine" as per the New York Times article. So, just sloppy journalism then.

And it would appear not much respect was shown for the CDC by the current administration at central or state level if the official US covid-19 pandemic response and the effect it has had is anything to go by.

Shortened quarantine periods are not limited to the US. In England, from Dec 15th travelers from high risk countries have to quarantine for five days only if they then test negative by PCR. The test has to be booked at an approved private provider and is paid by the traveler (https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/england-shorten-covid-19-quarantine-incoming-travellers-testing-13626266).

If I remember correctly there was a proposal to shorten quarantine in Thailand from 14 to 10 days. What has happened to that? If a test is performed at the first and ninth day you will pick out the bulk of cases; there is no absolute 100% safety.
