And its only early December.... Forget this high season, they're lucky if it ever gets back to "normal".

the Chinese came to thailand because of they had a cheap tour trip for a week or 10 days, They do not have a lot of extra cash to spend.. and they will not pay for quarantine or insurance. they will get a special deal..

here is the fear.. if any of these tourist catch covid-19 in thailand.. they are dead.. they may loose their job or even the government will block any one to go to Thailand. The Chinese government is not friendly and they only think Thailand is like a cheap whore with wide open for the take.

the Chinese government will not let their people go to thailand and spend a lot of money..

there is no value added to them ----Chinese tourist thinks of thailand. For

1, cheap food -eat on the street and drink Bht20 fruit drinks.--eat MOO KA TA

and Mcdonalds.. 2. buy cheap clothes- street vendors

the Chinese tour operators want to fill the hotels in china town only

the honeymoon is over between Chinese tourist and tour operators.. few are coming back...

the 70's?  dude, that was half a freakin' century ago.

the times, they've been a'changin'.

china was in the midst of the cultural revolution then.

yesterday they landed on the moon to retrieve samples.

If you read it, the point I made was that they are not known as big spenders.

Yes why not give the originators the chance of furthering their attempts at world domination. Now vaccines are coming on line they probably want a last chance to superspread or horrors upon horrors Covid 20 a new superstrain! Can't Thailand just put up with domestic superspreaders border hoping? Chinese tour groups only channel profits back to Chinese companies anyway!

Prayut won't do it he is waiting for the vaccine before opening the borders.

But a solution could be the total closure of Phuket with quarantine

Condition of entry,  must be injected against the corona VIrus on entry. Already been injected certificate . Well that could be false.

For now no population in yet the vaccine, after for travel on the world in a few months will be printed in the passport, unlikely to be fake.

A few cases is nothing. They are still having these regularly in China but they control the area incredibly well.

And you know this for a fact right?

Given that we are talking about an authoritarian, communist state that has total control of its news media and bans many social media sites, prey tell where your knowledge of China's Covid 19 control comes from?

I live there sometimes. Like you say, how did news used to travel? Word of mouth.

China is also doing that because their economy isn't that good...so why would they let chinese tourists spend their money elswhere when they can spend it in China?

Doesnt most of the chinese money spent in LOS go right back to china? hotel-tours-buses-planes-buffets?

As Thailand has lost its spot as the most popular cross-border destination for tourists from mainland China, according to a survey by HSBC Holdings Plc, as neighboring Japan and South Korea moved up the list.

so Thailand will have to really grovel and beg and offer freebees to the Chinese tourist to come here.. free seafood buffet and free massages comes to minds...

Both South Korea and Japan have recently posted increase in infections have they not? For South Korea since November 9th they have seen huge increases, when before they were within control. Japan ticked up after October 22nd. I would bet they are regretting their decision to bounce to quickly on encouraging the travel industry back. At the end of the day, the local population can in itself support the region which it resides. Tourism is not the only means or even the major means of income to a solid society. For Thailand, it just means finally they will have to be creative on what they with so offer the population that supports the revenue within the boarders, instead of sleeping, while they simply waited for a tourist to wake them up to obtain even the smallest amount of service, as was the case in most situations throughout the country. When the local say they will starve if the boarders are not open, is in itself an overstatement. Thailand is at least able to move about freely, and hasn't been subject to any severe lockdowns which would prevent a solid business from operations. This can't be said in the developed countries, which have forced business to close the doors or only service as take away, or outside service. Thailand has opportunity, they just have to do what they don't like to do...work for it, and be creative about what they do provide, instead of simply coping another in an effort to take the others business or worse still, take the competition out of business completely. Thailand knows how poorly the hospitals are staffed, and the fact that they don't even have enough nurses to support full care during normal times. Just imagine all the families that would be living out of the hospitals supporting their family or loved ones that did get infected, as that is the norm when you stay in the hospitals here, family or friends must come to help take care of the patients, the nurse don't see it as their jobs or duties. The amount of infections would be quickly beyond control. It's not about being brave to open up to tourism, especially not to the Chinese or their tour groups, lol. Really? Give me a break! When these so called money making tour groups were in full force before the virus they gifted the world with, the locals were complaining about how organized the Chinese were in not flashing their funds out, over packing the boats, buses and yes hotel rooms, with more than the occupancy would allow, all in the effort to save some money, even at the cost of lives in some cases, where buses crashed or boats overturned and sank, remember?

Why not? China is practically covid free. It doesnt make sense to keep the borders closed with countries that manage and control the pandemic.

i would say, Thailand should focus and expand on China, the biggest country in the world, a mass market, AND, bonus point, they know how to manage a crisis in an adult way.

It would have been great had they known how to keep H7N9 Flu, SARS, H5N1 Bird Flu, Hong Kong Flu (1968) or N1H1 and now Covid 19 within their boarder to begin with, no? As early as in November 2017, the Smithsonian Mag published a detailed report on the H7N9 epidemic where it asked its readers the question, “Is China Ground Zero for a Future Pandemic?” Three years later, the question appears to have been answered. President Trump’s trade czar, Peter Navarro, described China as a “disease incubator,” and that was before the outbreak of the Wuhan Coronavirus. Dr. Jennifer Huang Bouey, an epidemiologist and senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation, said, “There is quite a fair amount of epidemics originating in China or passing through China.”
