webfact
Employer in Samut Sakhon dumps his migrant workers by the road near Bangkok Picture: Daily News News page "Ton Prakan" had live broadcasts in the Bang Plee area of Samut Prakan last night of a group of 24 Myanmar workers who had just been dumped. Their boss in Samut Sakhon - center of a major outbreak of Covid-19 in recent days - had put them in a van saying they were to be tested. Instead they found themselves by the side of the Bang Na - Trad highway just outside Bangkok, reported Daily News. Picture: Daily News Police were wondering what to do with them as they did not have any testing capability and putting them up at the police station or in immigration facilities could lead to further spread of the virus. They said that the workers had been moved there from Mahachai Muang Mai. Popular Post pixelaoffy
So what many of us knew! The borders of Thailand have never been really closed since April . Just airport restrictions ! The land borders have leaked like sieve, as they always have. Unscrupulous cheap labour gang masters have had a supply line of those desperate for work for years and gov done nothing done about it, even when there,s a pandemic with locked borders ! Popular Post KamnanT
Heartbreaking. The poor and desperate used as ultra-low cost labour to support a fishing industry that operates to medieval standards, then dumped at the side of the road like trash when their employer gets scared of actual repercussions for his crimes. I hope someone treats them with some compassion, but it's unlikely.

Popular Post darksidedog
There is a depth of callousness in some people that I find truly appalling. This is such an instance. I hope the authorities find this miserable boss and nail him for whatever criminal offences they can. (Hiring illegal workers, crossing a lockdown zone, whatever.) He deserves it. 34

Popular Post Jeffr2
They have this same problem in many other countries. Hiring of illegal workers. The US started arresting business owners and it helped a bit. But going after the workers isn't the way through this. They're just poor souls trying to survive.

The workers know who their employer was. They can probably speak Thai. Police can get information on where they worked, for who, and for how long they worked. Then they can use every law in Thailand against the employer and all the fines for illegal hiring of staff, exploitation, tax avoidance, not reporting whereabouts, harbouring illegal immigrants, people trafficking... whatever stupid law going back to Ice age they can find, to make an example out of this greedy <deleted>.

I know there are 'recruitment people' who help and funnel these workers illegally! Don't lecture me about what you know I dont. Make sure you've got the necessary paperwork for those you say you hire ..along with the bribes to make sure everything is processed ! paperwork all sorted. Very simple procedure. They process millions of them every year. No bribes were required. Here is one I had, he just finished the floor. He and his fiancé saving up for five years in Thailand so they can go back with the money saved and the skills learned to build a house without a mortgage. He is 23 years old. Setting him and his family up for life. Nice, hardworking people. His sister, brother and father are also happily employed here. Another one I am good friends with, a makho operator has been here happily for 13 years. He doesn’t ever want to go back. My Thai mate employs four in his restaurant, similar stories. I know there are a few horror stories. They are the ones you have read about, but there are also millions of happily working in Thailand lifting themselves out of poverty and feeding millions of mouths back in Burma, Cambodia, Laos etc. The Thais giving livelihoods to these millions of people is a positive thing. They would be stuffed without it.

Popular Post Dogmatix
Thailand has been losing its competitiveness and share of foreign direct investment within ASEAN for the past 25 years. It's maximum potential growth rate when all goes well is now only around 3-4%, the same as developed countries. So it can never get out of the middle income trap and become a developed economy. The government has no meaningful planning apart maintaining the military/bureaucracy/ politico control of all power and grabbing as much as possible from corruption and economic management is incompetent at best. There are no plans to make education competitive and increase the base of knowledge workers needed to move up the value added scale and attract foreign direct investment. There are no plans to introduce a modern investment code like Vietnam's that allows foreign investors to own their own business or land, except under temporary BOI conditions. All this means that Thailand will fall behind economically and eventually Thai workers will have to go to neighbouring countries like Burma and Vietnam to seek low paid work commensurate with their low skills and poor education. Even for that, having failed to learn English despite studying it at school for many years, they will be forced to learn local languages like the Burmese workers here learn Thai.
