The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has ordered the closure, until January 4th, of horse race tracks, cock-fighting and fish-fighting rings, as well as entertainment venues as COVID-19 infections spread to at least 43 provinces.

Entertainment venues facing closure include those serving food and beverages, offer music or karaoke or allow their waitresses to sit or dance with customers.

City Hall Spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said on Monday that the closures are necessary to contain the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the least impact on businesses and the general public. Once the situation improves, he said the tough measures will be lifted, but if the situation does not improve in time, they will be extended.

I predict that compliance as well as enforcement will be very spotty, which probably means that I just want to pretend nothing is happening. I guess what I really want to know are the actual day to day numbers for Bangkok going forward.

Last time enforcement was hardly required as compliance was so high where I live in Pattaya. Thais have a greater fear and awareness of illness and epidemics than many westeners as they have not been cosseted by free health care systems.

I am sure this is listed as one of the signs of the long awaited apocalypse.

This morning I read in another newspaper that "massage parlours" have to close as well.

Have they now removed this?

Right: What exactly is a massage parlour? Something noughty?

If yes, this can't be possible as such things do not exist in Thailand.

What about stag beetle fighting?

Yes indeed, very popular where I lived among the mountains of Lanna. Roadside stalls sell the beetles - just look for the beetle sign! Of course, gambling involved!

Thai rhinoceros beetle fighting is an ancient Northern Thai tradition and although its popularity is in decline it still has its enthusiasts. This is the time of the year when the sounds of small ridged sticks rubbing against logs of wood used to be heard emanating from back yards throughout the north of Thailand.

I haven't seen anything indicating that regular sit-down restaurants are covered by these latest restrictions. I think they're more aimed at some "entertainment" type places.

An update in another BKK thread today:

"Moreover, he said Internet cafés, massage parlours, fitness clubs, swimming pools and salons can remain open as usual.

Bars and nightclubs can also stay open but under certain conditions, including that staff are prohibited from being in close quarters with customers, while customers themselves are banned from dancing. And these venues must close by midnight."
