Second nest of baby leatherback turtles hatch at Bang Khwan Beach

PHUKET:-- A total of 47 baby leatherback turtles hatched and successfully made their way into the sea from a nest on Bang Khwan Beach last night (Dec 28), the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has reported.

 

At about 10:50pm, DMCR officials went to examine the nest on Bang Khwan Beach in Moo 7, Khok Kloi, Phang Nga, just north of Phuket. The examination came after CCTV surveillance showed that the sand on top of the nest began to sink, indicating that the baby turtles below were hatching.

 

“Officials examined all 47 of the baby turtles and found that they were strong enough. Therefore, officials released all of them to the sea,” the DMCR explained in a report posted late last night.

It has been a very good year for turtles on the west coast.
 

The beach just south of Natai beach had two nests of the worlds largest sea turtles for the first time since the tin mining days. Looks like they are making a comeback. Further north have also had quite a few nests.

Because Turtles have been hunted and killed to an endangered species level. The publicity makes people aware of their rarity, stops sales of turtles on the open market and stimulates protective measures such as the 24 hour guard of the nest.

Hopefuly it will enlighten those who decide to hunt them for shells and meat.

I can recall when you could purchase cans of turtle soup around the world. 

Turtle soup from freshly caught turtles were a mainstay in many restaurants in tropical locations in the 70s.
