Leatherback turtle lays eggs on Phuket’s Kata beach

PHUKET: For the first time in decades, a large leatherback turtle came ashore at Kata Beach in Phuket to lay eggs yesterday (Jan 1).

 

The turtle came ashore in front of the Kata Beach Community Park at 00:50am, much to the amazement of people still on the beach celebrating the New Year.

 

The turtle’s shell measured 150 cm long and 119 cm wide, with the turtle’s front  left flipper measuring 86cm long and its front right flipper 83cm long, reported officers from thre Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR).

And because of all the human attention, which is what drove them away in the first place, it won't come back.

Maybe not but the babies if they survive will definitely come back to the same place 'cos that is what they do.

And now everybody, please let these turtle alone. They are not fond of many humans looking over them and they may not come back if so. 

Be aware of these creatures to be free of hassle.

Agreed..turtle thinks, ok , seems something is afoot as there are no damn people around lately, a perfect opening for me to try this in peace........just look at the disappointed face on the turtle as slack jawed gawkers look on!

hopefully they will section off the nesting area so that people cant dig the eggs up and that the eggs have a chance of hatching

Hatched tonight. Just seen a picture. I drove past earlier and the area was busy in expectation. I decided against going back. Bit disappointed now.

 

Well done to all those involved in protecting the nest. It's not often Thailand gets plaudits for its conservation efforts but this was an excellent effort.
