Certainly doing well on the reduction of class hours by changing school days to public holidys.

I don't understand. More foreign teachers. For teaching a foreign language I understand. But for normal school lessons maybe a upgrade of the teachers education is necessary. And maybe to change the difference in school. The King's schools are only for the fortunate few who have supporting friends and enough money. Shouldn't these schools be about excellence? Attract the best teachers and take on strait A students with scholarships. And on all schools a strict program for all children giving each child the opportunity to the same development. Why? Because children are the future. They support their children to get a better life and they keep their parents until the government provides enough support to feed themselves.

‘Budget regulations’

I could be wrong but I seem to recall hearing the MoE has the 2nd largest budget allocation (second behind MoD, the highest)

Ha ha ha ha, the biggest problem is that the Ministry thinks . Sadly illogical and unispiring they have overseen the degradation of Educational standards and they expect TEACHERS to change and WORK. The title Amazing Thailand springs to mind .

intrigued to know what this will be

A couple of years ago I was asked by the head teacher at a local school if I'd be interested in 'helping' to teach the kids English conversation in an 'informal position', and for free.

I said yes, as long as they organised a work permit for me (even with no salary).

Then I had to explain to the head teacher what a work permit was. I didn't hear from them again.

Education Ministry vows to improve school programs

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Education has announced its commitment to improving the quality of education provided at schools, streamlining complicated regulations, and hiring more foreign teachers.

The Minister of Education Nataphol Teepsuwan has disclosed the Ministry of Education’s overall performance in 2020, acknowledging that there were some limitations preventing certain targets being achieved, such as budget regulations.

He said the existing regulations will need to be streamlined and improved to reduce the complexity, while some redundant rules will also need to be cancelled.

Mr Nataphol said the Ministry of Education has this year adopted a clear action plan to achieve its future targets, such as the reduction of class hours while improving learning activities, as well as the development of community schools.

The Ministry of Education earlier proposed to the Cabinet a new school lunch budget calculation, which will cover cases of school mergers, where the budget for the smaller schools will be transferred to the new medium or large schools formed from the merger.

The Ministry of Education’s plan is also aimed at promoting the employment of foreign teachers, addressing some existing regulations that have complicated the process, while promoting other campaigns such as the Human Capital Excellence Center, the DEEP platform, and the Excellence Individual Development Plan, all of which help increase opportunities to improve the education system.

Privatize the entire system. Competitive bidding to the most highly qualified educators worldwide. State pays a fee per student. Schools then are allowed to fail students and hold them back if they are not showing initiative, getting decent grades and doing the work.

It would allow a complete dismantling of the failed education ministry. They are incompetent, indifferent and actually seem to have a mandate to provide only poor quality and mediocrity.

Whilst I agree that there is too much nonsense going on in Thai schools, I must also admit that they are more fun to learn in. I'm not sure if the stiff program, we rule in the West, is always the best. I have kids in school here and generally I think, it is more fun to learn here. This might depend on the school of course.

For example, does the so called "PISA study" incorporates the actual happiness of students? I guess not. I may be biased here, but I can say that I used to hate school back home. My kids here love it.

Common sense and critical thinking is a subject I have to teach my kids at home though... It's called raising children.

Have a nice morning everyone.

thai state education has some 22% of the government budget. That's apart from very large private education, funded by parents, which take care for hundreds of thousands kids, from kindergarten to university.

this ministry is the most corrupt, with 30% being looted, starting from stealing meals to kids.

On top of it big bribes to get into good school.

Private schools are expensive and poor quality - probably tens of thousands kids do study abroad, from India, Malaysia, to the UK. During terms air planes are full of thai kids going back home

But you only have this skill, along with the understanding, knowledge of its relevance and desire to pass it on to your children, because you went through the oh so boring Western education system.

Kids going to school to have fun and grow socially, while the parents take responsibility for the boring 'becoming an intelligent and independent thinker' part is a great idea, but it is only an idea.  Most Thais won't think like you nor will they have they had the education that you had, so this is all irrelevant to the subject being discussed.

Great for your kids and I'm sure you're a wonderful parent, but irrelevant to this discussion.

A good start would be exams that actually test the child, my partner is a Filipino teaching English she is qualified up to BA level she sets and marks exams that are then overseen by lesser qualified Thai teachers who mark up all fails to pass.

Yes, Thai schools are indeed fun. That's true even through university. It has been said that Thais goto school not so much to learn knowledge but rather to learn to be more Thai. In other words, Thai schools are primarily socialisation institutions.

But, yes. Thais are fun loving people! It's simultaneously their most attractive characteristic and what holds back their national development.

Big progress does not come from taking life lightly. It comes from hard work and sacrifice and grit. Thais generally (not all) lack this type of internal drive.

I would never tell anyone what to do with their children. But, I would caution anyone raising children in Thailand to be extremely vigilant in balancing the Thai socialisation - that is required to be successful in Thailand with Thais - with socialisation that works outside Thailand. In other words, kids should be able to code switch and understand that many of the ridiculous aspects of Thai culture are not acceptable outside of Thailand.

The Minister of Education Nataphol Teepsuwan

This person led the 2014 Bangkok Shutdown.

Overthrowing a government is so much easier than actually governing.

He has ZERO experience as an educator.
