Cautious optimism as number of new COVID-19 cases in Thailand declines for fourth consecutive day

The number of  new COVID-19 cases in Thailand  has declined for  the fourth  consecutive, according to the Centre of COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

 

CCSA spokesman Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin said Thailand 205 new cases on Friday.

 

Of the new cases, 131 were local transmissions, 58 were among migrant workers and 16 were imported from people entering quarantine.

 

Thailand also reported a huge increase in the number of people discharged from hospital (734) on Friday.

 

No new deaths were reported. 

 

4,519 people remain in hospital or held in a migrant worker quarantine centre.

 

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 9,841, with 67 deaths.

 

Dr. Taweesin added that 16 provinces in Thailand have not reported a new infection in the past 7 days, 4 provinces haven’t reported a new case in 14 days and 20 provinces haven’t reported a case since 15 December 2020, while 37 provinces have reported just at least one case in the last 7 days.

Quite possibly, but most of those out and about in Bangkok wear them anyway due to the (lack of) air quality so in reality little will actually change.

They large numbers of cases in the early days were not new infections that occurred on each specific day, they had been accumulating for a while. They were high because we were playing catchup.

 

The decline in new cases now only means that we've caught up with most of the older infections. It is to be expected regardless of whether things are getting better or not.

We should expect another spike due to travel and mixing over New Year. Time lag is usually 1-2 weeks

The number of reported cases are going down again.Well that was a nice and short second wave and a fine example to the world how good Thailand is at covid stopping,or it could be something like very little vitamin D deficiency.Who knows.Don't they?

The bigger question is how many tests were conducted.  If fewer then the days before you would expect lower numbers.  My side of Bangkok for the past 5 days has been very light on Traffic, and the MRT at less than half capacity when we have utilized it.  The local stores where we shop have few customers, and the carts which usually line the road at the corner of Rama 4 and Sathon Thai Rd in front of the Q house have been reduced to about 1/4 of what it was before.  Yes, it appears people are working from home as well as staying indoors, which will hopefully allow the numbers to keep dropping.  Lumpini Park has also been at about a third of the capacity it normally is during the times we go.  The Condo I reside in has not only closed the Gym but now the pool as well.....

Social distancing is the main factor. I'm sure masks help a bit.

 

If masks were that good, then there would be no need for social distancing, quarantine, etc, would there?

I suspect you a correct but I hope you are wrong. The one thing that might save us is the diligent tracing they do here.
 

The big worry now is the new highly contagious UK covid mutant super strain that is spreading across the globe. Reported in Perth and in Brisbane Australia yesterday with Brisbane now put back in lockdown and devastating the UK currently.

If we can avoid getting that, hopefully the Thais can manage this current outbreak and dodge this bullet until the vaccines ramp up and we can return to normal.

205 new cases reported on Friday

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) announced 205 confirmed new cases on Friday.

 

CCSA spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin started his daily Covid-19 press briefing by apologising for public misunderstanding to do with the MorChana application. He made it clear that only those who concealed key information about their travel would face punishment and that people who do not possess a capable phone to install the app don’t have to worry about being charged, cooperating with health officers is enough.

 

The 205 new confirmed cases include seven Thais returning from Sweden, France, the United States and the Czech Republic, and two foreigners – from India and the United Kingdom – in state quarantine as well as seven illegal border crossers, all from Myanmar.

 

Of the new cases, 37 are in Samut Sakhon, four in Loei, four in Ang Thong, one in Lopburi, one Buriram, 11 in Chon Buri, four in Nakhon Pathom, one in Pathum Thani, one in Lamphun, one in Suphan Buri, one in Surat Thani, four in Chiang Mai, one in Samut Songkhram, 29 in Bangkok, one in Krabi and 22 in Samut Prakan.

 

Meanwhile, 58 cases were discovered via proactive testing in Samut Sakhon (five Thais and 16 migrant workers), Chon Buri (21), Rayong (7), and Chanthaburi (9)

 

In addition, the source of infection in eight cases is still being sought. They include three in Samut Prakan, three in Ang Thong and one in Bangkok.

 

As of Friday, 734 patients have recovered and been discharged.

 

The number of confirmed cases in Thailand has risen to 9,841 – 7,740 of which have been contracted domestically and include 2,742 migrant workers, and 2,101 returnees. So far, 5,255 have recovered and been discharged, while the death toll remains at 67.

 

According to Worldometer, as of midnight on Thursday, the number of confirmed cases globally had risen to 88.49 million (up by 820,357). Of these, 63.51 million have recovered, 22.98 million are active cases (108,296 in severe condition) and 1.9 million have died (up by 14,665).

 

Thailand ranks 130 in the global list of most cases. The US tops the list with 22.13 million, followed by India 10.41 million, Brazil 7.96 million, Russia 3.33 million and the United Kingdom 2.88 million.

Should be pretty obvious to everyone really, they are obviously not testing many people so, the less you test, the less people they find positive. Typical Thailand and them wanting to show the world that Thailand are becoming “experts” at everything....

The cases of Covid may have declined for 4 consecutive days, but its not going to last.

Today, I took the Missus for a routine check up at Banglamung Hospital. We arrived at 7.30 AM and sat in the designated waiting area. 

At a Nurses station, there was one particular Nursing Assistant, who never wore a mask or face Shield from that time until 9.15 AM when the Doctors started to arrive.

All very bad, but this was the Station for Post Natal, so she was in contact with very small babies with no immunity what so ever.

And she was the only person that I saw during all that time that did not conform to the rules.

The Wife and I then went to Big C Pattaya Klang.

I saw a Korean not wearing his mask, so told him to do so, we then carried on shopping, and what do you know ? the same Guy I saw again not even 10 minutes later again not wearing a Mask, and this time I was non too polite to the ignorant Guy.

With attitudes such as this there is little hope of containment, and places that are used by the Public who, as a whole are doing the right thing should have Security personnel to eject these rule breakers from the premises or even their Jobs.
