Nine illegal Chinese - three Thais - arrested in Chiang Rai

Naew Na reported that police in the Thoeng area of Chiang Mai responded after a group of foreigners was seen outside the Ban Mae Loi Rai school on the Chiang Rai to Thoeng Road. 

 

Arrested at the scene were three Thais called Nikhom, 64, Thanawat, 48 and Tui 63 - all natives of Chiang Rai.

 

With them were nine Chinese people aged 19-27. 

 

They had all travelled from Mae Sot, Tak, in Thailand's north west and were apparently about to cross illegally to the Golden Triangle economic zone in Laos. 

 

All the Chinese were illegal immigrants; some had expired passports. The Thais had driven them in three cars. 

 

They were all checked for Covid by the health authorities in the area before being detained by the Thoeng police ahead of prosecution.

Nearly made it back .. must have gone through a few checkpoints from Mae Sot, been a few reports of them crossing from Burma, something to do with casinos there apparently

Thoeng is in the area of Chiang Rai, not Chiang Mai, probably a typo

 I do not think so as this area of Laos houses a giant Chinese casino complex - "Kings Roman Hotel and Casino" with easy access to China.
