Private hospitals can import Covid vaccine: Thai FDA

The government will not block private hospitals from importing Covid-19 vaccines, said the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday. However, the vaccines must be approved and registered with the FDA, said its secretary-general Dr Paisan Dankhum.

The FDA chief confirmed that AstraZeneca (Thailand) and Sinovac Biotech have submitted approval applications with the FDA for their vaccines, which are being purchased by the government.

Manufacturers or importers of other vaccines that have already been registered by foreign food and drug agencies could also apply for approval, said Paisan. The state does not have a monopoly on Covid-19 vaccines and would not block their import, he added. Private hospitals could purchase a vaccine that is registered with the FDA or, as licensees, register the vaccine themselves.

“People can be confident that vaccines registered by the FDA are safe, high-quality, effective, and can prevent disease. In order to protect consumers, the FDA is preparing to tightly monitor vaccines for safety,” he said.

To register vaccines with the FDA, Thai licence holders are required to present safety information, plans for use, and contingencies in case of side effects.

The FDA’s safety assessment will consider results from the vaccine study, including dosage size and vaccination period, plus quality control in the production process. Paisan said the FDA would not be responsible for the price of vaccines offered by private companies.

Great news.  I'll take the jab as soon as it's here.  Unless it's from Russia or China! ????

That's probably what they will be selling though.  The western ones probably won't be available till later.

Was it just two or three weeks ago,  Time flies. The hospital that the government banned  from selling the vaccine was going to sell the moderna vaccine.

Obviously they could get it, and fast. :whistling:

Or India. However India is one of the greatest vaccine produceres for vaccines we use world wide today.

Geez, all the negativity.

If followed thru I understand, it is very good news.

And, the fact they can choose other approved vaccines.

From my experience dealing with them, I would trust Bumrungrad or Bangkok Hospital to do things correctly.

At least it is an option for those that the cost is of no real concern and want a proper vaccine and possible protection for their life.

Hope this is available soon.

I will use BKK hospital´s sevices for vaccine when it arrives. No problem.

India is working with AZ to produce the jab.  Just like they are doing here.

India has already said they will sell the jab in the private market.  Sounds like Thailand might be doing the same thing?  Great news!!!!

I can see the entire vaccination program going sideways very quickly.

Allowing private hospitals to import, allowing local administrations to conduct their own programs and, of course,  anything else Anutin does to make life easier for him, will end up running out of control with poor management.

The program needs to be managed professionally.....the distribution similar. With this plan they're talking about, IMO, chaos will result.
