Pattaya hotels want to be closed so employees can claim state benefits

 

 

Hotels and tourism-related businesses in Pattaya want the Chon Buri provincial administration to order the temporary closure of all hotels in the town, so that their employees can claim unemployment benefit from the Social Security Fund.

 

This proposal was raised with Pattaya City Mayor Sonthaya Khunpluem at a meeting today. Pattaya is now deserted, since Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat and Samut Sakhon were declared COVID-19 Red Zones. Entry to and exit from these provinces now requires official authorization. These lockdown measures have severely impacted the hotel sector, with occupancy rates at almost zero.

 

Representatives of the hotels reportedly told the city mayor that, in the neighboring province of Chanthaburi, the governor has already ordered all hotels to close temporarily and they want a similar measure applied in Pattaya and other districts in Chon Buri.

The government want them to remain open so they don't have to pay a thing and let the hotels sort-out the finances.

Tourism is not returning to Thailand anytime soon. If you think about it, the group that comprised perhaps 60% of all arrivals (lower to middle income Chinese and Indians) are the ones who have been hardest hit by this idiotic worldwide economic shutdown. Tourism in Thailand will never recover to even close to it's former levels, and that leaves millions out of work. Most countries will still be required to have Covid letters, as the virus is still raging in many countries. And some countries will not issue that letter (impossible to get in the US). Plus, will the mandatory health insurance still be required? Will it be even stricter than before? And just what are people returning to, or coming to? Will restaurants be open? How about nightlife? And now, with the recent outbreak within Thailand, caused by extreme incompetence with regard to NOT shutting down Samut Sakorn province immediately, once this outbreak happened, domestic tourism has died too. Good job guys. 

 

Within a year, if this virus gets under control, Thailand may see 25,000 tourists a month. By 2022, they may see 2 to 5 million tourists. Maybe. It may take 5 more years, before they see 10 million tourists, and it will never, in our lifetimes, get back to the levels it was at, pre-covid. There were already a dozen areas and issues that were not being addressed. What sacrifices are the authorities willing to make? I do not see any discussion of this, but rather the vapid "TCOKU" (Thailand is the center of the known universe) drivel. They will return, simply because we open back up. No. Not the case. You need to do alot more than that. Thailand will be forgotten over time. Thailand needs the world, 20x more than the world needs Thailand. Are they addressing critical issues, like the air and water quality, traffic safety, public transportation on the southern islands, rapid rail transport, and the lack of law enforcement? No. Nothing, and I mean less than zero is being done.

 

Perhaps trillions of dollars have been invested in tourism infrastructure, with the faith and the hope that should anything terrible happen, the government would be there, they would step in and they would do something to assist and to help both Thais and international companies that have invested a fortune. Instead what are they getting? Absolutely nothing, sheer timidity and an extreme and pathetic lack of courage and a do nothing attitude.
 
Do anything, just don't do nothing, we are counting on you to do something. Anything is better than what you're currently doing, which is nothing. Pathetic. Cowardly. Apathetic. Grossly incompetent. There are so many unanswered questions, it boggles the mind. One thing is for certain. Thailand will be feeling the effects of this for a very, very long time. So will the rest of the world.

 

Prayuth, Anutin and Pipat need to submit their resignations immediately. They are way in over their heads.

It is either close them or give them a timelimit to close or Thailand is going to be even more screwed with more people sleeping on the streets or turning to crime.

 

It makes sense to allow businesses that have been making the social security payments to close so that their staff can get something.  If not there is going to be a lot of bankruptcy's.  Same with any business that is involved with tourism.

 

I am sure there is also some sort of assistance that businesses can get and that may help the economy that they are so worried about.

 

If they are worried about money make it a time limited offer you must close for 1 year.and open once your time is up.

Fake news the hotel owners are not asking this at all. Just another goose from a association that wants a free lunch. Nothing is closing just like the ASQ for tourists won't be removed either. Tell other employees find new work

What a bunch of <deleted>. My wife and her friends in the same business are heartbroken they have lost their jobs and own sense of independence and worth. Believe it or not there are some that actually want to work

Why is the Thai government pushing the responsibility of looking after Thai citizens during a national disaster, which is also a global pandemic, onto private businesses?  Ridiculous.
