It's a common refrain. and there are those who have sung it in respect of the illegal drugs industry in many countries. The problem is that once one source of revenue is closed, the mafiosi manufacture another, and so the cycle is perpetuated.

And we all know who the mafiosi are in Thailand.

The mafiosi will run casino's anyway legal or not.

What you will see is more debt, crime and poverty.

And not to forget about money lenders, extortion and good old- 'shootings

It will happen eventually...

...but will Thailand seek the help of an International casino group, like Singapore did with Sands, to create the most profitable casino in the world, with one of the most iconic buildings and shopping districts...or will they do it themselves and screw it up?

I know where my bet will be...so to speak.

Running cows,bull fighting,fish fighting,cock fighting, beetle fighting,boxing soccer matches,the list goes on.

Thais gamble a lot!

Legal gambling in casinos will draw rich Thai and a lot of tourists, they gamble out of Thailand now.

Make it legal and cash in!

Indeed. But I am not interested in outcomes, I am interested in causes for the purposes of this discussion..

As a casino investor around the world , I can really see the joy of a commercial high roller ( and others ) casino in Bangkok , and Pattaya , what a coup., Plus maybe Phuket .

BUT , a major part of me fears this outcome for the locals , massive household debt , financial education limited to say the least .

The damage would be massive , I appreciate that it's everywhere else , but here , we all know the outcome , it's not going to be pleasant .

Financial literacy , understand why " giving " does not work , it's all a little frightening .

Easy to prevent...  Limit entry to foreign passport holders.  Other countries do the same...

Another bonus of regulating and taxing it:  authorities can dictate the percentage paid back to bettors.

Very bad idea! Thais are unable to control themselves when gambling and will loose their money house car job and turn to crime especially drugs as a result. And taxing betting will line the pockets of the same people it does now!

Personally I think that it is a very good idea even if a relatively small percentage finds its way to public coffers. Why have Thai high rollers going to Cambodia to gamble when they could be losing their money here in Thailand?

I don't think that it would particularly attract the common Thai as they currently have no problem finding places where they can gamble.

Personally, I am for the many small business owners running their gambling dens. Make a big casino and all those small business people get wiped out as happened in Melbourne in the 1990s and the very rich get richer.

The way to do it, is to make large, luxury casinos for foreigners only (entry by showing passport), which brings loads of rich gambling foreigners to Thailand solving the tourism problem very quickly.

Leaves the small gambling dens operating as usual with no loss of jobs.

That's a good point.

Years ago when someone in government (can't remember who) was challenged as to why gambling was illegal, but they ran a lottery.

The answer was that the lottery is not gambling, but 'a game of chance'.

Just the same as all gambling, I would have thought.

The lottery is run by the government and they don't want competition

Must be quite a dilemma.  Which to legalize first, casinos or marijuana?  Both are a great source of extra tax revenue (which of course will be spent wisely) and generous offshore payments.  No wonder the existing leaders want to stay in power el dorado is coming.

Getting desperate now....... Drugs, prostitution and now gambling.........   What a laugh...... I'd seriously suggest you get some CPR on that golden goose and try re-build all the great tourist pulling venues all over Thailand that have been destroyed by the myopic individuals masquerading as being in charge......      This is what happens when you forget where you came from........   Talking super bowl and playing tiddly winks......

They should open legal casinos, but only allow entry to non Thais. Other countries run casinos on that basis. Obviously your passport would be your nationality identifier for entry, because as a foreigner you have to have one to get into Thailand. Will be a big hit with the Chinese when they return.

And the owners are ?????

I thought it would have opened by now.

The Melbourne casino was owned by the Packers, already one of the richest families in Australia. They wiped out all the little guys, two up schools, and especially in Chinatown.

Those casinos in Australia are horrible places, real soulless vacuums.

I can't believe some people actually go to them for entertainment other than gambling; drinking, listen to music etc.

The casinos along the Cambodian border and elsewhere there are hotbeds of Chinese criminal activity.

I for one do not want any such abominations here, thanks.

Nonsense you have never been to Melbourne crown or wrest point in Hobart. Both have excellent bars and night nightlife.

I have been to the Crown in Melbourne actually. Never been to the one in Hobart thankfully.

Not my cup of tea I'm afraid.
