As usual someone misreads the article--which says that foreigners will get in free by showing their passports and Thais will have to pay 3000 baht.

Democrat MP, Issara Seriwattanawut is clearly dreaming ---- I lived in central Central Singapore for many years and now in Central Bangkok and I can clearly, without malice state that Thailand under NO circumstances will EVER achieve the status at ANY level of Marina Bay Sands of which will always be number one, followed by Macau in SE Asia... if your a cheapskate gambler and want to gamble goto Cambodia... cheaper also ???? Singapore is way above your proficiency of even minor success.

Should suit Thailand well as Gangsters galore are already running the country !

Been to Vegas many times, good shows also... funny thing I saw once was a homeless guy holding a sign for money, not your typical '1$ for a coffee' but said 'kick me in the nuts for $5' --- true story..

Here in Thailand the "Singapore Model" will quickly degenerate into the "Las Vegas Model" where gangsters control everything.

You are indeed misinformed about the current "Las Vegas Model". Suggest you update your databank.

They don't understand if they would legalize prostitution and also cannabis how much taxes the government would make.

How would they understand with gambling, not to mention sports betting in regulated and licensed businesses.

Probably has to do with too many (illegal) parties involved in that businesses and then loosing income.

Also keep in mind that most politicians here are real dinosaurs regarding mindset so it might take a few year (or coups)

They actually  do make tax money from prostitution If I remember correctly there was an article that a lot of them pay taxes to get the social benefits

The Singapore Casino is an absolute disgrace & the lower floors just look like "pigs at a trough"

I went there twice & both time treated like we were criminals.

The smoke from cigarettes is horrendous (& I am a smoker) & unable to even have a quiet beer at the tables but can annoy everyone with your smoke.

It reminded me of the first casino I went in in Macao in 1972

It is just catering to take the money off hard core Chinese gamblers.

It is a disgraceful model & Genting in Malaysia not much better

If must have a casino here look at Australias, not perfect by any means but at least can relax, have a bet & not feel like a leper

Why!!!!   Opening gambling dens is not what's needed to bring back

prosperity to Thailand.  You shut bars down, refuse restaurants to

serve wine or beer or alcohol of any kind....and open gambling dens!

Where is the logic in this??  it is a country of great hospitality and

over and over, this is shut down because of Covid.  There are relatively

very few cases in this country compared to the rest of the world.  I

cannot recommend my friends from Canada to come here because, at

any time, the current government can make a trip to Thailand a nightmare

of inconvenience and draconian dictates.  Gambling dens are not the answer.

There is a very interesting article in that other English language newspaper in Thailand today.

It describes that legalizing gambling is not as easy as it sounds. Because then it has to be properly regulated and some people should not be allowed to gamble.

It's obviously also related to the corrupt police. But that is not the only problem.

Well you've summed up the pro's and cons so succinctly no need to read it now ...

A Democrat Party MP suggested at the weekend that Thailand should look towards Singapore ideas and open a legal casino.

Increasing calls for the matter to be discussed have come in recent days after the spread of Covid-19 at illegal casinos in Thailand and the involvement of police in taking bribes to allow their operation.

Issara Seriwattanawut said that the casinos in Singapore provide 60 billion baht to government coffers that is a fifth of the fight against Covid. (It was unclear which country he was referring to in this statement).

The checks and balances of casino operations in Singapore is something Thailand should investigate.

For example there are strict controls on who can play. Foreigners can enter for free (on production of their passports) but locals have to pay 3,000 baht to enter.

The Singapore government has set up the NCGP (National Council on Problem Gambling, established in 2005, notes Thaivisa).

This regulates the industry. For example if a husband proves to be a problem gambler the wife can go to the NCPG to have him barred, said Issara.

There are no TV ads allowed to promote gambling and children learn and about its perils in school.

Issaa said he was not proposing that Thailand follow everything in Singapore but consider their approach and possibly hold a referendum on the matter.

You will never have a referendum on anything in Thailand with Prahyut in control  as he knows better than everyone or thinks he does.
