(Reuters) - A single winning ticket for a Mega Millions lottery jackpot of $1.05 billion, the third-largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, was sold at a supermarket in a suburb of Detroit, lottery organizers said on Saturday.

The holder of the winning ticket, which would have cost $2 to buy, had yet to contact the lottery as of Saturday morning following Friday night's draw, Mega Millions said in its statement. The ticket was bought at a Kroger supermarket in Novi, Michigan, the statement said.

The winner can opt to receive the jackpot in annual payouts over 29 years, though 24% must be given in taxes to the Internal Revenue Service, or ask instead for a one-time cash payout of $739, receiving $530 million after taxes.

The jackpot grew over four months after 36 previous draws produced no winner.

The largest ever lottery jackpot was the $1.586 billion amassed in January 2016 in Powerball, the country's other multi-state lottery.

In October 2018, the Mega Millions jackpot reached $1.537 billion.

Mega Millions tickets are sold in grocery stores and gas stations in 45 U.S. states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands, which split the proceeds.

A ridiculous amount of money, winnings should be caped at, I don't know maybe 10-20 million max.

Share the prize among more people.

Sometimes it is many winners.  It rarely grows so big.  No lottery in my state.  Some people drive to next state to buy. The LDS controlled state can't trust the faith of its members.   I don't mean nd because I think lottery tickets are often bought by people who can least afford it.

Like the Thai lottely you mean, where you pay substantially more for a ticket but stand to win a merest fraction of $1bn....

Totally agree.  Unless I win, in which case, I totally disagree!

I wouldn't even know what to do with so much money.

Hmm, or maybe I do.

Wait a minute...

I could buy a local soccer club which I hate and turn their national soccer stadium into a kiddie minigolf course and have the players bring water and such to the kids.

Yeah that's my plan.

Now where do I buy a coupon ????

If there is no winner in the lottery, it is rolled over into the next drawing which is why this payout if so large. There are also many other winners of smaller amounts of money.

Not sure just what I would do with $530m.

Here's a start

55+ knots and a range of 3500 nm at a significantly reduced speed! The back 1/3 without the portholes is engine room. It only has three engines.

True, the Thai lottery jackpot is not massive, but:

The odds of winning a 6,000,000 Baht jackpot on the Thai lottery are 1 in 1,000,000.

The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302,000,000

I would think bigger than this.   It would have sails.    Why would I need an elite visa ? I will not need to stay on land much.  Sure would not be Thailand if I had a woman who keeps up to standards.

I'm not sure how many people won the millions $ pot.  If you had the  numbers but not the power ball you won 30 million baht minus taxes so maybe 18 million.  Cost per ticket is 60 baht.    I read that 1 in 302 millions odds number too, So actually if I'm not missing something  paying 2$ for chance to win 560 million$  at odds of 1 in 302 million plus chances at lessor amounts amounts to  better odds than most casino bets in Vegas.   Except playing craps properly at a high odds table.

I'm not a lotto player of gambler much.  But I do like a Texas hold em game.
