Neo Pattaya: Project to transform resort into state the art metropolis begins - starting with Walking Street

Pattaya will never be the same after the pandemic is over, tourists came because of the atmosphere and bar girls, cheap food, beer, entertainment. Changing to a clean, up market walking street will kill all before. Not to mention the high Barht. Tourism across the world is suffering with the pandemic. As long as all countries are insisting on 2 week quarantine, thats 4 weeks of quarantine in and out for most people. I would predict about 2024 things maybe back to normal.

They cleaned up Khao San and that is thriving?

Take the soul out of a place and make it more popular? Fogettaboutit. Even Chinese tourists don't go to Walking Street to shop.

What exactly would you have to take from Bangkok to end up on the monorail in Pattaya? How many changes of transport? And they want to attract high-end tourists? High-end tourists would not want that hassle. So wrong-headed. I, myself, just take a private taxi. Get from one hotel to another easily. A real high-ender could hire a limo. But what exactly would be the attraction that would cause them to make the trip?

At first I though the headline was saying they were turning Pattaya into an art metropolis. Now that would be a great way to attract high-enders. Imagine if Walking Street was filled with artists. Well, a different type of artist from those in the past (smoking, darts, bananas, fish etc). 5555

The best Idea would combine go-gos with artist (real ones) studios. I would hang out there.

A perfect neo-Pattaya would have a police force; no dogs; no haze; working taximeters; sidewalks; drains; AND '80 billion baht in public funds,' would be spent on the public.

Agree,  and maybee  they can help this people with some thousands from the 80 billions  baht public funds?

So they should fix just that and not touch what gave the city its special athmosphere

You do understand what I frastructure is?

Secondly in post Covid Thailand....there is no such thing as post Covid.

So the nature and demographics of tourism in Thailand is going to be different.

They will need to identify the differences and then work out what Thailand can sell in this new environment.

....and your comment of trying to ge back to the same as before really exemplifies the point I was trying make that their is littke or no evidence that neither Pattaya nor Thailand have the oeolle with ability to take up this opportunity and run eith it.... it needs both technical excellence and imagination....

Goodbye "Airport"... goodbye "Sugarbaby"... goodbye "Windmill"... I'll miss you ????

If this goes ahead, I guess the rents on Soi LK Metro will be increasing significantly in the future, which was the very reason many gogo's and bars started there in the first place, cheaper rent.

Soi LK Metro will take over from Walking Street for the sex tourists.

Where will be the next location that bars and gogo's start up to avoid high rents that are cost prohibitive to business?

All this development, reconstruction, new ideas & billions of Baht will take years to complete, hence giving those that have lost revenue due to COVID19 time. During this period people will generate & develop a new entertainment area to provide an income. It will be the same sort of entertainment we've enjoyed for years only at a different venue within the city. This will take very little time as Thai's are quick to pounce on an opportunity to make money & habits die hard ............. also an investment of billions of Baht won't be needed to provide a "night out to remember".......... fact.

The Chinese will decide how to build up Thailand and the rest of South East Asia. They will be the only people with any money. They just ignore Covid now. When you ignore Covid you have incredible growth potential.

China will only have a problem if the US manages to start a war.

Oh, they are night crawlers. I haven't had an opportunity to be creeping around soi Buakhao after midnight for a few weeks now, but will keep an eye open and ear cocked for this pack.

That's a rebranding no one - really no one! - asked for.

Destroying a brand that flushed millions of visitors (and not to forget: tens of thousands of expats, quite a few of them quite wealthy...) into the city every year.

At the same time, the roads in the city remain on third-world level, only a few African cities of this size have worse roads than Pattaya, and the repair works on the roads NEVER STOPS!

Also, almost no green remaining, even Pratumnak Hill gets sold off and buried under more concrete in slices.????????????

Way to destroy the unique, world-renowned image and tourist magnetism of a city while not even doing the homework to provide safe roads.

So who is going to come ? There may not be much left for the previous groups. And the wealthy sure are not going to put up with what's noted in your third paragraph.  The chinese ?

the monorail could be good, the one in Las Vegas works very nicely and drops you inside the Casino's, never have to go out into the heat! going to be interesting what they plan to charge for a ticket, bet it won't be 10 baht ????

Have you ever been to LV?  The monorail goes behind the Casinos and is extremely far away from this strip.  In 4 words, it is a failure.

Can anyone point to the research that co forms the need for these "improvements"? Is there evidence of future demographic/customers for such a project. Do they really understand what infrastructure will be required.

As for the marine projects, have they even taken into account the depth of the bay and channels for boats and ships???

Maybe they're  just going to start dredging willy-nilly?

Will they choose this moment to bulldoze down ALL the illegal businesses built over the beach in Walking Street ???

Yes Please, all that money spent over MANY YEARS, on countless court cases and multi judgements to tear them down but somehow they cannot get it done.

They are all illegal on the Seaward side of walking Street so they should have no part in any future plans.

I believe there are some kind of squatters' right involved. Most development there was before proper land mapping and ownership took place too.

The other problem is what remains when / destruction took place....beach? Mud, drains or another inappropriate built monstrosity that destabilise  the coast even more?

And I thought it was all illegal construction as the beaches are public property.

I think if you look at how Thai law and enforcement works, you'll soon realise that nothing is that simple. It was only about 20 to 30 years ago that the country began surveying property and land use so any dispute over land has first to define exactly which land they are talking about....than they have to decide on ownership. Similar scandals have happened in Phuket and Samui....strangely enough the same family keeps getting involved..../
